I just wanted to know what people were declaring as modifications on their LR's for insurance purposes (if at all!!!)

I have a Disco 1 with a 2" lift kit, modular rims and Cooper STT tyres, winch bumper (well will have in a week's time), but have not declared any mods to my insurance. I have never declared any modifications to my insurers over the years, whether its cars or bikes..........but now I am starting to think I had better, as I grow up a bit

I understand if people are worried replying to this thread, for fear of self-incrimination. I am not a copper, and I do not work for any company related to insurance etc etc.

Just want to know what typical extra premiums are for modified Landys, or if anyone has been shafted by their insurance.

Cheers, Dale

I have all mine declared, premium not bad at all.
If you dont declare they will use it as a reason not to pay out on any claim, declaring your insurance invalid as you have not given the full details for them to base the premium on.
I would think these days they only need the smallest of excuse not to pay up.

those that dont declare any mods are foolish

if in doubt declare it simples, then the insurance dont have any ammo to wriggle out of a claim

I have decared all mods just in case I need to make a claim did not make a massive
difference to cost. But I am an old git.

i had my renewal refused because i had put bench seats in the back (the fold up proper landy ones).
i had to take them out. nearly new bench seats going cheap!!

Mine isnt too bad either, but not a fair comparason as I have it insured for business use as well, but all my modifications are insured as new for old as because I needed business use I was unable to get agreed valuation.

i know its not a landy but relevent..... i think i built an all singing and dancing road legal track car it was a 180hp nova with very little standard on it and i insured it for 400 fully comp with every mod listed, i think its more to do with the particular company you are with than anything some will take the **** some wont

if you have a offroader poilcy when your on the phone and tell them they will quite often check and say that makes no difference and wont be put on the policy like a 2" lift or a-bar ( only pre1999) Standard policys will kill you for it but offroader / moddified wont.

i declared my winch bumper. they said thats no problem as its a bolt on replacement and not chrome.

I declared NOTHING!!!
Mug or fool you may say but at a young 23 with all mods declared they want £6000!!!
So I paid £500 and I will use the £5500 I saved to repair or replace it IF anything happens.

have to agree with what's been said, declare or run a big risk.

some companies are more understanding re mods than others (both in terms of accepting and premiums) - usual names mentioned on here (NFU, Flux, Lancaster) are more used to Landys being mod'd than the 'domestic car' insurers

Thanks for all the replys and opinions guys.......I might dip my toe in the water and ask, ahemm, 'What would it cost if I added these parts'?

I'm insured with Admiral, as they were the only company who could do us a decent multi-car policy. I had trade insurance before, and that was great because I was just insured to an indemnity figure of £15k, and it didn't matter what I was driving, it just topped out at 15 grand in a claim, but the premium was too much this year.

Thanks again.

For the last year i've had two Discoverys insured.

My 96 300Tdi Auto is unmodified and costs me £220 ish fully comp protected.

My 91 200Tdi manual is modded and all declared including bigger tyres with mud pattern (235.85R16 Cooper STT) Winch and winch bumper, Light bar, Snorkel, HD Steering arms, detachable tow hitch and all rear seats stripped out and the back boarded and fitted with tie downs. That cost £83.50 last year!

Unfortunately its due for renewal and Frank Pickles who I was with this year are no longer doing modified 4x4 policies!

i declared me wheels and steering guard when i added em. Also declared the standard towbar n bull bars just in case, didnt declare jate rings ext breathrs.

Just declared my tyres, rear side seat removal and lift kit "no charge"lets hope it stays the same next year!

I've got some mods - LPG conversion, modular wheels, also shocks & springs being better than 'standard'. Am wondering how insurers (esp Flux) respond to fitting a different engine, such as a Defender 2.5 in a Series 3? If done by qualified mechanic and using a replacement Landy motor, surely this should be ok? Any thoughts?
MC
PS The mods declared didn't alter the quote one bit with Flux.

My Defnder's on my Admiral Multicar policy - declared mods to them - uprated middle row seats, steering guard, diff guards, snorkel, roof rack, bike rack (yes, they consider a bike rack to be a mod) - charged me £32 :D

Admiral Multicar will cover some mods only....and yours sounds like virtually the maximum they will allow.
They would not even entertain insuring my bobtail
