So new to owning a D4 we have had 2012 for 8 months with no issues until loss of power, restricted performance and noisy idle this week.

Called the AA they had a look and said it was inlet manifold and to have this looked at .

Took it to garage and they repaired it, on the way home it lost power and was even noisier than before it sounds like knocking on the passenger side ?

I rang the garage they said it's not safe to drive, I won't be driving it now.

But what are my options now new inlet manifold ?

The cost to remove the body £1350 not sure about the works ?

What price should I expect to pay

A known fault for the D3 and 4 unfortunately, it's not a complex job buuuuuuut very time consuming the inlet manifold has to be replaced being that there are two one for each bank. Both are known to fail and it is best if one has this fault to replace both however it is more common for the drivers side to fail before the passenger side for whatever reason.

Additionally the inlet manifold incorporates the rocker covers making this a bit of a task that basically requires the complete top of the engine to be opened up. New manifolds, new gaskets and iirc diesel high pressure fuel lines and injector seals.

6-8hrs work and a hefty bill to match...

I can't quote off the top of my head unfortunately but it ain't cheap..

Bloody diesels.

Yes, mate replace them both, no need to remove body, injectors, fuel lines (I reuse these on D3 never had a leak) unplugging of a few wires and bits and bobs you can see what's in the way it's a day's work. The one I'm about to re-fit, one of the butterfly's had gone into the inlet in the head but hadn't got down to the valves worth checking out

Why do they want to remove the body? There's absolutely no need to do that, as everything is accessible from the engine bay.
If they're saying the body needs removing, then it needs to go to somewhere that knows what they are doing, and by the sounds of it they're clueless of how to cure the issue.
