Hi folks, I am looking at picking up an 1986 110 Landrover with the 2.5n/a engine. It is advertised as having an injector problem and when I spoke to the owner he said that he bought it with this problem and it would start and idle but wouldnt drive. He also said that he tried towing it and that there was a bit of smoke (not sure what colour or amount). The engine turns over on the key but wouldnt start for me. Any idea if the injector pump is the problem or is it possibly more..

Not looking to put in a tdi engine either! Any help would be much appreciated..:D:D

Assume you have checked that the throttle pedal is connected too the lever on the top of the pump. And that fuel and air filters etc. have been changed.
It would be helpful if yu could provide more info about the problem, colour of smoke, when it last rang etc. Did you use glow plugs when you tried to start it?
Local fuel injector place will often advise foc or for small fee.

Didn't check throttle did use glow plugs. He said he had it running and would idle. what are the symptoms of a failed injector? if the lift pump is knackered it would still run wouldn't it.

Worth a look at cable and linkage. No pedal for a cold start with these;)
Injector can have anumber of symptoms but doubt if 1 injector is causing this issue. They can be tested by injection specialist.
Lift pump would have to be totally shafted to stop it running, but remember a totally blocked fuel filter can be same as no lift pump.
Like the others said, this could be a number of things but provided youdont pay too dear you can sort it.

1 injector...Its the injector pump that is meant to be the problem..there is only one injector pump..isnt there??

My lift pump failed and it wouldn't start at all and the engine was warm.

Don't touch throttle until engine fires as you will disengage cold start.

Could be blocked filter or cam belt slipped or split diesel pipe etc etc:)

Is a slipped cam belt a big issue? I am not a mechanic but would give most jobs a try (after a bit of research) Would try the tdi conversion myself but don't have the funds at the minute.

Cant understand why it wont rev, nothing at all or struggles or you not got it started yet

I couldn't start it. but he said that he got it started but it wouldn't drive (that's the word he used) I will ring him again tomorrow and clarify.

Could very well be as simple as lift pump. When mine went a couple of weeks ago, it took some turning over to start, but idled perfectly. When revved without load, it just sucked air in and misfired. I did not attempt to drive it but it would probably have stalled under acceleration.

It could also be a lot more complicated of course :)

Why not start at the beginning and check the linkages are OK, and then try bleeding the injectors?

You will then find out if fuel is getting past the pump and giving a feed to each one.

If she then fires up and ticks over, it is easy enough, even with the linkage off, to blip the link on the pump, and see if the engine speeds up ... or not!

I would be inclined to do these bits first rather than throwing cash at something which may or may not be the cause of the fault! :) ;) ;)

Try bleeding filter then pump 1st if it will not start then
try slackening the pipes at he injectors then turn engine over each one shoud leak as pump supplies them.
Has it been running on bio or veg oil as a blocked filter / tank pickup coukld also give the sysmptons described.
Ie enough fuel to start but not enough to run.
