Bit of background. 56 plate TD4 Freelander. Engine management light (yellow) was coming on at 2500 revs and would not rev above that. Car had almost no power. There was no smoke from exhaust.
I suspected that the engine was being starved of fuel and I couldnt hear the in tank fuel pump running at all.

I checked all the fuses.
I have changed the in tank fuel pump.
New pump does not appear to be running either.

Any ideas guys? I'm stuck now.

If there is a dead sensor, that may stop the ECU demanding more fuel when required. Did you also change the fuel filter?

I think you need the ECU fault code read

Aye ...only now the damn thing wont start so getting it to a garage may be a problem.

Does the engine immobiliser act of the fuel pump?

I thought by 56 plate you have an lp pump in the off-side rear wheel arch and the hp pump under the bonnet. I thought all you have in the tank is the pick up

I might be wrong here but I thought I had a low pressure pump in the fuel tank feeding a high pressure mechanical pump under the bonnet?

RM is right - a 56 plate TD4 should have only one lp pump (and the filter) in the off-side rear wheel arch. In the tank it's only the fuel-guage sender unit.

When my pump failed the fuel cut-off in the engine bay had to be re-set too.

When you turn the ignition to position I you should hear the pump running for about 2 minutes before shutting down.

When you replace either the pump or the fuel filter you need to follow the correct 'self-priming' procedure.

Fair point, I missed the age of the car. LP in rear wheel arch will sometimes respond to thump as it usually sticks before failing totally.

Right well something is very wrong here ......mine is a 56 plate but I do not have any fuel pump under the wheel arch.

All I got is a lift pump in the fuel tank and a high pressure pump under the bonnet.

And the damned thing still aint starting :(

You just haven't found the pump yet. The tank has only a sender unit.

Off-side rear wheel-arch - forward of the wheel - at the bottom of and behind the plastic inner liner. Give it a whack to get it going as a temporary measure - perhaps.

Stupidest place in the world to put it I know - but that's LandRover for you.

I said changing it was a dirty awkward job. :(

"behind the plastic inner liner" might be what is hiding it from you. Can you post a pic of your " lift pump in the fuel tank "?

Yes - that's the fuel guage sender unit - exactly what I have in my tank - no pump there.

Have you looked behind the inner plastic liner yet?

Cant at the momment SV. I'm working today. It got too late/dark last night to look.

But if thats just a level transmitter in that picture then I suspect you are right and I'll need to get the back wheel off when I get a chance.

Its odd that they call it a pump though. Think thats whats confusing me. And it dont take a lot to confuse me :)

Once you've found it / confirmed it's there - let us know.

I can give you my comments / tips /advice on how best to change the pump and the filter, if you wish.

Singvogel.

The photo from Famous Four a few posts previously is for the combined in-tank pump and sender unit. You can see the fuel line connectors on top of the unit. I have just replaced mine in a TD4 built Dec 2000, and registered in South Africa Mar 2001, and it is the same unit.

The sender unit also has fuel line connectors because it is also the fuel pick up, but has a 2 pin connector for the fuel guage only.

Update to this in case anyone has similar problems....

Singvogel was absolutely correct. It was the pump under the drivers side rear wheel arch which was faulty.

Replaced. Car now running.

Thanks SV :)

Hi Chaps,

I'm new to this having just joined but as a non-member previously I learn't so much about so many things just following these threads. This one in particular because prior to it's recent service, I was experiencing severe lack of power when engine cold - especially frosty mornings. Having read some comments about fuel filters, I asked the garage to change that too. Turns out it had never been changed and the lift pump housing was also cracked. The barrel is plastic and over time becomes fragile (my Freelander is 10 yrs old). Pump and filter replaced (located inside o/s rear wheel arch) and she's flying and using less fuel. So from the new boy, if you're experiencing lack of power when engine cold, or starting problems, get the low pressure lift pump checked out!
