Hi Firstly of like to introduce my self James and I'm really hoping someone can help me out, my disco (300tdi) is leaking oil but around the same time i noticed my clutch slips when the turbo kicks In. Some told me it may be the rear crank seal? Can any one advise me on this? Thank in advance all help is highly appreciated.

Where's the Oil dripping from? Gunk the engine wash off and see if you notice where the oil is from. If from the bottom of the bell housing then my guess is yes. Rear oil seal on crank. It could just be a coincidence that your clutch is on the way out.

The rear crank seal is a very common area for leaks.
Its a gearbox out but if the cluch is contaminated with oil then it will have to come out anyway so do it at the same time.

Okay thanks, is it a big job to do the crank seal if it is that?

It's definitely a DIY job but not for the novice, unless they are prepared to "have a go" !!

You need to remove the gearbox and transfer box to gain access to the back of the engine. Then remove the flywheel to access the old oil-seal.

Do-able but not for the faint-hearted is how I would describe the job. Expensive if done by a garage as very labour-intensive.

Good luck

Dave

Or if you don't like lying on your back on cold concrete you can whip the engine out and do it on a bench !

Okay brilliant ill think ill be having a go my self at it. Got a few friends who are into the landrovers aswell so ill ask them to come and assist me. Also just a quick one my high low / diff lock lever jumps out of high now and then. What do you think may be causing that to happen?
