Guys, fitted a new denso alternator, battery, drive belt, fuel pressure regulator on disco 2 td5 today- then took it for a long drive. What a difference, seems alot more responsive. It is was getting quite tired at 155k, but this has given a new lease of life. I been working up to this for a while, done the decat, de egrd etc. Having had the 04 for maybe 5 years now it has probably not run as well as it is now. Was thinking D3, but I think she's good for another few years- got most of the tools now so committed! If anyone has anymore ideas on improvements let me know.

This is interesting. Can anyone with more experience ,pinpoint which component changeover made the difference .

probably the fuel pressure reg if the old one was failing as td5's require a steady 4 bar to perform correctly

a new genuine(Denso) alternator can make some improvement too cos it's quite common to the old ones to have some diodes out of the 8 pack a bit "tired" and then the charging voltage has an AC component which can disturb the various ECUs, it's possible to be one or two of them shot without even noticeing it cos the charging voltage is not affected just that the parasitic drain is a bit higher than normal... i've seen this not once but the only certain way to check is with an oscilloscope which would reveal a sine wave within the DC, the p/n junctions can loose theyrs qualities in time as any other component believe me, especially if the engine got overheated at a time, for a 11-15 year old car it's a good move to put a new genuine alternator anytime if you can afford, that's a fact:)

a nice and easy to understand post http://www.brighthubengineering.com...w-to-test-an-alternator-with-an-oscilloscope/
