Hi guys looking for some advice. I have a 2006 Land Rover Frielander td4 and the ignition key doesn’t turn

do I need a new ignition barrel? If yes is it only the dealer that you can get it frim
 
Sounds like it yes. Some graphite based lock lube on the key may help if it is a sticking pawl, they wear and then the key doesn't line them up and the barrel won't turn.
You can't change the barrel, the whole steering lock assembly is complete.
Dealer or other LR supplier but you may need to have a different key for the ignition unless you change all door locks too.
I assume you have tried wobbling the steering wheel to check it isn't the steering lock holding the key??

Hi, if you have to replace the ign. switch with a second hand one, according to the parts list, you will have to get one from a vehicle after chassis no 3A242164 (as the parts list says they're different from earlier models) It also says the manual & auto use different switches.
Auto:- part no. QRF101270SW
Manual :- p/no. QRF101260SW both priced at £480.64 inc. vat :eek:
 
Are you parked with the steering wheel hard to one side or the other. If the steering wheel is under pressure against the steering lock you won't be able to turn the key.
If this is the case then turn the wheel as hard as you can away from the lock to free it.

I’ve got the same problem progressively getting worse, the steering wheel is neutral, I.e., no strain but the key simply will not turn. Can’t find a used part anywhere and don’t mind having an odd key.
Took 10 minutes of wriggling today before it freed, probably be ok for a few days again now but I need to get it sorted. Can I remove something? I.e. the steering lock as a temp measure...don’t think the vehicle will get stolen as there are much more attractive vehicles to steal around here
Have tried lock lube etc.

The steering lock is probably lower on the list of security devices in car these days than the purp having to adjust the seat to a comfortable driving position.

TBH if they can get past the door locks, alarm, immobiliser - then a steering lock ain't going to stop them. But you'd need to tell your insurance co.

I've never stripped those areas down before and don't know what's easy to swap out/remove - but might be worth seeing how much a barrel and key is from a breakers in case they are worn rather than a problem with the steering lock.

You may have to remove the steering lock to remove the barrel - I don't know - just musing.

If you do swap keys, you'll need to swap the transponder chip over from your keys for the immobiliser - or sellotape the old key to the steering column :oops: Now that is a security risk.
 
I only have one key for my 1.8K F1 & occasionally the key won’t turn in the ignition, but if I take the key out & turn it through 180 then re - insert, it works. Might be worth a try, (if you haven’t already ?)
