Hi guys

It seems to be one thing after another this week :(

My idler pulley decided to seize up and snap the belt - depositing bits of molten rubber all over the pulleys and engine.

Anyway, got a new belt and pulley, cleaned up as much as I could, checked all other pulleys and they seemed fine.

All good so far - when the new belt and pulley were fitted I started her up and right away I could here a definite metallic noise at idle speeds.

Checked pulleys again and seemed fine but metallic noise is still there at idle, but i think its getting worse. Also there's a metal noise now when i switch off engine right at the end - 2 metal clanks as engine stops.

Hoping it will be the tensioner pulley ( cheap) rather than the crankshaft pulley ( far from cheap).

I'm still using it for short journeys and hoping for the best, but want to get it sorted before it turns major.

Any ideas appreciated.

Check the tensioner first but I have a nasty suspicion it may be the water pump and/or power steering pump.

The waterpump is driven by the back of the power steering pump. I rekon that the sudden stopping of the belt may have damaged the the drive surfaces that mate together. (They are like 2 castleated nuts that are facing each other). Take the waterpump off and check it's drive faces for signs of wear or cracks. Then check the same on the back of the power steering pump.

I was hoping that myself after the tensioner. At least the water pump and/or the power steering pump will be financially lighter than the crank damper :eek:

I went for the other 2 as the noise seems to be from the bottom of the engine at idle.

if it was the crank damper you will be able to rotate it about 40 degrees(or between 12 and 2o'clock ) with your hands.
 
i had a crank damper go when a idle pulley seized. recorded a video on my phone for the noise it was making. pm me your email and i'll send it to you. it might help it might not

Got the video - got it to play - sounds different to mine.

Mine is making a sound more like 2 pieces of metal banging together - i listened more carefully today and i am going to take apart the power steering pump and the water pump - as was suggested earlier.

before you do just try turning the crank damper left to right, it will be tight even if its gone, but it cant hurt and wont cost a gasket to check

Will do

It'll be Monday before I get chance to look properly but will let you know the outcome, in case it might be of use to others in the future.

Haven't been able to get to it yet - had hoped to but other things came up.

Still Driving around as little as possible - rattle still there but not sure if it's getting worse.

Hope to meet a LR specialist this Friday so will let you know when i get home.

Also have to sort out a funny air suspension compressor problem so hope i can get some answers all in the one day.

Well finally worked out what was rattling :(

OK, so the crank damper is gone - outer metal piece doesn't move at all by hand, but the inner ring that the belt fits onto can be moved by hand from about 12 o'clock to about 3 o'clock - so that has to be done, and no 2nd hand ones to be had anywhere.

The actual metal noise at idle turned out to be the pulley that the viscous fan is attached to - easy enough to get the part but if you look at it then you have to take half the engine apart to get at it, or so i am told by my local specialist.

He said he had never seen one of those go on any TD5 previously - must be just bad luck. So tomorrow i will have a price for doing it all and it aint looking cheap right now :eek:

welcome to the club, i had a pulley sized on me which broke the belt and the knackered damper. yes its rare on the td5 common on the td4. for **** sake though make sure the guy change's the bolt that holds the damper on, it not part of the kit and its a one time only fitment, does up to about 4to 500nm
 
fan & pulley should just unscrew from eachother....

Fan and pulley do indeed just unscrew. That's no problem.

The hard part is where the pulley goes into the engine. The shaft goes right through the front and you have to get at it from the inside - hence having to take the engine half apart to get at it.

Right now i am going to wait a while - looks like the total bill will be about half the value of the disco, including sorting out the air suspension compressor - so i am not going to rush into it.

Oh to be back in the UK with LR specialists on every corner :)
