Hi All,
After being a long time lurker on here, decided to take the plunge and get myself a disco. I've looked through lots of threads with some good advice for buying one, but I have a few questions I have not really found answers for.
I'm buying mainly as a weekend toy, something for a bit of greenlaning and P+P. Not out to spend a fortune, so some of the high milage stuff fits my bracket. No objections on spending money to get it to what I want, but I'd rather buy something decent to begin with rather than spend all my money sticking a POS back together. I've a list of the stuff to check from a couple of threads on here which I have been using on the ones I've been to see (and there are some really bad ones so far)
In terms of engines I'm fairly open to either petrol or diesels. There seem to be a fair few V8's with LPG conversions with underslung tanks - although the general consensus seems to be that that these are not so great with offroading in mind. So I've been looking round at some TD5's also which i've seen a few that fit what I want, but some are fairly high milage.
Talking to a few people at the LRO show, it seems that the 200/300tdi's are good for 300,000 miles - are the TD5's in the same kind of longevity range? What about the 3.9 petrols? I'm not going to (initially) be piling the milage on, but its nice to know that if I need to sell it, it not going to be an issue if the milage is high
I guess a lot comes down the the life they have had, and the servicing etc that they have been given. I'd probably look at getting a decent service or overhaul done as a first job anyway
Also, people seem to prefer the 200/300tdi's for the lack of electronics, is there anything I need to be aware of on a TD5/Petrols if it ends up getting a bit wet - anything need doing to begin with?
Thanks in advance
J
