Ive just bought myself a 1995 3.9 V8 Discovery on LPG, its runs fine while moving but is a little lumpy when idling. ive given it a good service including plugs and leads, but that about as far as my expertise goes. things ive noticed so far. there appears to be no vacuum system on it at all, there are some loose pipes here and there but thats it. even the pipe between the manifold and the vacuum advance on the dizzy was replaced by a NAIL. anyway after looking it up on rave ive replaced that pipe although the vacuum advance still isnt working. i will order a new unit tomorrow on the 'bay of e.' anyway what i'd like to know is, is there anyone near rugby in warwickshire with a decent knowledge of these beasts to check it over and tell me what else is missing and to help/fit any new bits i may need (you will be compensated for your time!) ive been to 3 garages in my local area and they all seem to contradict each other, so i'd rather have one of you guys look at it.

Sounds like its been bodged and a bit of tlc needed. My dog writes to me all the time:D
I'd carry on the way you're going sounds like the vac diaphragm is split, so repipe it replace vac unit, set timing and see what happens! Then buy a welder:D
 
Yeah I read it just fine, though paragraphing would have made it easier!

Ok first things first, forget the LPG for now and get it running perfectly on petrol AS IT WAS INTENDED (sorry, I am antiLPG :D)

Then as above go through as best you can to find any obvious problems. The vac advance is fairly simple. The pipe goes from top of throttle body to the outer side of the vac unit (the nipple on the dizzy side should have a cap on it but doesn't need one) but also in the pipe is a vacuum damper. This is vital, get one. Then ask us which way round it goes when you do :)

Pull the dizzy cap and look at the vac actuation, suck as hard as you can on your vac hose (without the inline damper thing in the way) and you should get actuator movement. If not, replace!

Perhaps provide a few pics for us to inspect and see any obvious faults!

At tick over there is no vacuum from a ported vacuum port.
Before buying a vac. advance, remove distributor cap suck on the vacuum pipe and watch if the plate moves within distributor if it does whilst holding the vacuum seal the end of the pipe with your tongue and watch if the plates stays wher it it is and that the vacuum even after 20 seconds is maintained.
LPG compared to petrol has a slower burn rate and the basic timing has to be advanced by a further two degrees to compensate. but remember if you change to petrol you must retard the timing back.
