would you believe this ? and i thought i was just replacing detent springs.

More n likely linked to your lost springs fella. If they fall out the synchro wont work properly and you'll be crash changing, putting a lot more strain on the shaft.
 
What could have happened is that the gearbox was in 1st or 2nd,an engaged 3rd or 4th similtaneously,the detent springs is only there to keep the hub in neutral.
