Hi guys, I’m in the middle of an extensive overhaul of an old 300tdi Defender. I’ve done loads of work on the motor, it runs mechanically well but something is up beyond my understanding! It hunts at idle, almost like 3cyl, struggles to pick up a little then flies up through the revs sweet. Smokey too.. I’ve replaced the turbo, valve stem seals, decoked, new lift pump, flushed the fuel lines back to the tank and drained and I’ve stripped, sonic bathed, rebuilt the injectors. I’m now looking at the VE injector pump suspiciously but it’s been fettled previously so my start point on tuning is dubious, is there a way to ‘reset’ the pump somehow reasonably? Is it something else all together?? Hopefully someone will determine it’s a common problem and I just haven’t come across it yet!! Thanks in advance Really desperate to get it on the road!

Try a compression test.
This perhaps makes a lot of sense, I would have changed the rings but I received the wrong shells and got impatient when rebuilding, the motor stood idle for a long time and despite running perfectly when I first got hold of it- this problem manifested within 100miles or so. Thanks- I will change rings and do some other bits before getting worried again about fueling.
