I know I posted this before with no results but I am going to ask again as Newbury spares day is at the weekend and I want to make sure I am buying the correct parts.

I am aware of the difference between front hubs with the older versions having wider spaced wheel bearings and preload set with two hub nuts and the newer ones having narrower spaced wheel bearings for use with the tube spacer for preload and fitted with a stake nut. I am looking for a pair of hubs for an earlier axle with the wider spaced wheel bearings. I am likely to be presented with (hopefully) a pile of lots of hubs at the newbury spares day and I need to be able to tell them apart. does anyone know the measurement of the bearing spacing for the earlier and the later so I can measure at the show and make sure I get a wide spaced hub.
 
I believe the changeover point was in 1994. The older, wider ones have a more sticky-out 'nose' where the drive flange fits.
 
The hub/stub axle change came with the 300tdi, but I think the stake nut/spacer came later.

Can you be a bit more specific. That sounds like exactly The sort of information I am looking for.

Err. . . . I'm afraid I don't have any examples to hand, so I'm running on memory here. I've had a look in my parts catalogue with a magnifying glass, because the diagrams, although very small, are often a rich fund of information about the shape of parts or the order or orientation in which they should go, but they don't show it clearly. I can find the part numbers, but I assume you'll be looking at stuff autojumble style and they won't be neatly arranged by part number. Can you take one of the kind you're looking for and compare them?

Exactly. It is autojumble territory. And I am expecting a big box of rusty hubs that I will need to rummage through to find the correct ones. Unfortunalty the examples I have are all fitted to vehicles! I have some pictures of what I need and have the parts manual for the old vehicles but not the newer ones. I am hoping that if I find two that are different in the same place it will be easy enough to tell them apart when side by side. It is when they are not in the same place Andi only have one example to look it I want to be sure which is which.

I suppose another giveaway is that the early ones are drilled to accept the screws that hold a brake drum on (if they're intended for the back, at least) and the later ones are drilled and have a machined shoulder on the back to accept discs.

Many thanks for the pictures, unfortunately at Newbury this year there was not the large piles of hubs I have seen in previous years so I did not have much to look at and compare to. there were lots of complete axles in trailers, and a few series one dotted around but I only found on set for a defender and they came fitted with the swivel and ball. The seller claimed they were from a '92 200tdi 110, and after refusing to sell me just the hubs said to come back at the end of the show and if still there he would think about it. Went back at the end and he agreed if I could get the off I could have them. removed the HD drive flange that he wanted to keep, go half way though the bearing and he gave up and said to take the lot. So I have one hub/disc assembly and one complete short side swivel unit and drive shaft for £20 that are claimed to be correct. I will strip down and have a more detailed look this week but at that price it was worth the gamble.
 
Sounds like you've got a few more spares than you bargained for, but they were very reasonably priced. You'll be needing a new shed at this rate.
