Hi,

Newbie on here, having just bought a 1988 110 CSW. It needs some TLC around the body but not worried too much about that and it runs really well on it's 200TDi conversion.

On a motorway run the other night I was in a straight line when there was a horrible metallic grating sound and a sudden veer to the right. I slipped the clutch in and drifted across the the shoulder and had a look (in the dark) nothing obvious. There is a bit a wine that can be heard over the engine noise but as you can imagine it's not easy to hear specifically with the truck being about as soundproof as a chieftan tank !

I am thinking wheel bearings / hub bearings but never come across this before so any advice is welcome:confused:

jack it up and check (spin) the wheels indvidualy you will see or hear the prob .if it bearings or anything else
 
whilst you got it jacked up and spinning place your hands at 12:00 and 6:00 on the wheel and wiggle it in a rocking motion backwards and forward toward you and the vehicle . Serviceable bearings generally allow slight movement. Anything more (5mm or so)will require retightening the bearing, servicing the bearing or replacing the bearing.
 
yup, deffo wheel bearings - change em, it's only a 20 min job (well the first one will take all day then you will see it is only a 20 min job!)
 
Wheel bearings don't tend to make horrible noises and then get better. Make sure nothing got caught between the brake disc and the brake shield(or in the drum if thats what you've got).
I have also found that you sometimes can't feel the slack in a bearing with the half shaft still connected. If you take the half shaft bolts out you may get a better idea.
 
also might be worth replacing the bolts (caliper, hub etc.)
instead of wishing you did when they snap off (3 of mine did!!)
