Hi, How do I value my Landy Defender 90 300 TDI County Station Wagon (1997/8) R Reg. 166k miles.
Its mechanically sound but not in mint condition. Been used as a landy should be - towing horses, harrowing field, carrying hay across field. Its a bit tatty but otherwise very sound. Similar Landys (age & mileage) on autotrader are in much better condition are going for £11-£12k but cant see how mine would be worth that. Equally I dont want to pitch it too low. Can anyone help value? many thanks

Start high, if in no hurry you can always come down
300tdi station wagon has got to be one of the most desireable defender models going.
If they complain about the condition tell them to jog on, you will sell it so no need to let it go cheap, unless its to me!
Everyhing will sell if the price is right, put up some pics for ideas of price

Thanks Lynall - here's some photos taken today (so not clean or sale ready yet). Imperfections include - no aerial (horse snapped it off), busted front spot lamp (same horse who's name we wont mention kicked it), was spray painted when I bought it (white to grey) peeling around window. Dent in rear, it leaks (obviously) and key snapped off in the rear door so have to lock/unlock from inside. Its been well used for purpose. I've not been precious with it. Beyond gutted to be selling it but I need the money for my new business. photos to follow below...

Auto trade and eBay are good starting points for a price. It would certainly be worth giving it a good clean to make it as presentable as possible. A full years’ MOT is worth doing too if there isn’t too much to do to it as this will increase it’s saleability. Make sure the seats and trim are clean too. Time and a small amount spent doing so is well spent.

Parker’s guide gives you a guide for your vehicle according to condition and age. Steer well clear of the car buying organisations (we buy, etc...) as they will give you peanuts for it.

As already said, if you aim a bit higher, you can bring the price down a bit. The model is sought after and is a late model too. Keep watching eBay and autotrader as there is a turnover of vehicles so you should find something similar. Don’t give it away though!

Having just seen your pictures and description, a bit of time spent sorting the niggles will be of benefit. It’s got a roof rack, alloys and decent tyres, all of which are extras to increase the price.

Looks good but the state of the chassis and bulkhead are key factors. If they are good, I would start at £10k :)

Thanks guys, really appreciate all your feedback. Will take it to my mechanic in the morning to check out the chassis and bulkhead.

I would definite spend some time fixing some of the smaller problems, a new arial, new rear lock barrel (even if on a different key) and either a matching single or a new pair of front lights plus any other small niggles it needs. Providing you can fit those yourself, and there are plenty of guides one here, the parts stated above should be about £50 and although no necessarily increasing the value will hugely increase the ease of selling as you are no longer selling a vehicle with a list of known fault, no mater how small they may be. As mentioned the true value will be based on chassis and bulkhead condition followed by mechanical condition.

I would also sell the roof rack separately as what it is worth on its own will not be be added to the value of the vehicle. Removing it will make no difference to the overall price.

Its daft but the little things is what will put people off so buy a cheap aerial, throw the broken spots in the bin, tuck the wiring tidily out of the way and go for it.
Its a nice looking car, mate of my mate bought an N reg same colour for 10k about 4 yrs ago, it was pretty tidy but not mint.

Im sure you realise but your average defender buyer isnt no normal car buyer so they dont expect mint, but will expect decent chassis and oily bits.

I bought a 300Tdi SW last year. It needs a bit work NS bulkhead requires welding, paint work pretty poor, new back door required and front doors require work. I'm a plater by trade so I can carry out the work, but what sold it for me - it was a genuine county station wagon. If it had of been a hard top I would have walked away.

As said, tidy it up, fix the faults then bung it on ebay starting price 99p. Set a reserve if you don't want it to sell for peanuts. As Shimsteriom said in post #2 its worth what someone is willing to pay for it, ebay will allow that to happen. You can search on ebay 'advanced search' 'sold listings' to see what people are actually paying for vehicles rather than what owners are asking for them.

if not ebay, start a thread on a Land Rover forum asking what its value may be then post some nice photos and someone might make you an offer...

I did notice the irony myself.
Middle aged bloke joins asking the same questions and all he gets is spam and chopped meat replies, 42 year old jodhpur wearing woman and she gets all the blokes being helpful and constructive  And no one moans about the lack of 'no introduction'

I wonder how many of them combed their hair and stuck their chest out before replying :p

Are you sure its a female? to even notice surely that makes you sexist, or if you knew it was a bloke and spammed him does that make you a bully/troll?

I dont take any notice of most of the names, I notice the regular ones, but if the thread title interests me I take a look, if I think its interesting or a reply will help I reply, of course if I can wind someone up then thats also worth a reply!
