Got a used 200tdi diesel pump and fitted it today.

Got a problem as the circular black plate that protrudes into the timing belt chest (the one you stick the drill bit in to time it up) was missing from the shaft on the pump.
No problem I thought, I'll pull the one of me old pump with me puller and stick it on the 'new' one.

Did that no problem but when I come to put it on the 'new' pump there is no way of lining it up on the shaft. There is a woodruff key slot in the shaft but the circular plate has none, the old pump has a woodruff key slot as well but none in the plate.

So can anyone tell me how to line the circular plate up correctly on the shaft please.

AND.. the 'new' pump has a lot more resistance than the old one and it clicks noisily when turned....is this normal and will it quiet down when pumping fuel.

Pheew. lots of problems, thought I'd have it done this afternoon.

Been looking for a free manual to download so as I can find out how to line up the wheel on the pump but searching hasn't helped as yet.

going back to have another search.:D

Stab in the dark here.....anyone know how to time a 200tdi diesel injection pump.
By time it I mean how to set it when refitting the hub wheel that shouldn't have ben taken off by the pratt who sold it to me and says there nowt wrong with it :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Still no further today,
I'm praying for a miracle but not holding my breath,

Thanks but...

The hub wheel at the other end from the four pipes was missing when I bought the pump so as it is impossible to lock the pump timing and there are no guiding marks for fitting the hub wheel on from my old pump.

therefore I think I have spent 100quid on a pump that is a good one but I cant use because the engine will never run unless I can get the hub wheel back on in the correct position.:(

Right then all is not lost here , have you got a DTI guage and mount or borrow one ?? . If you can then set up the DTI guage in the back of the pump ( when its all clamped in a vice or even fitted in the landy !! ) . Follow the guide in my other post above to get the primary lift of the plunger .
You will find a 10mm bolt and a bent washer on the left hand side of the pump body ( when looking at it from pulley side ) , this is the pump spindle locking bolt ( undo the 10mm a tad and slide out the washer and keep it safe ) . you can screw this in with your fingers till it stops , you can then use a spanner to just NIP it tight but no more .

First off before you lock it you must find out the primary lift like I stated above - when you do that ( you will have to hold it in position or the spindle will spring back ) nip up the 10mm bolt to lock the shaft then mark it ( be a lot easyer with your original pump pully niped on the shaft .

Now you have a datum to work with - the pump fires ( as a want for a better word at this time in the morning ) every 90 degrees . you can remove the stop solonoid and remover the plunger out of it then screw the solonoid back into the pump .
fill the pump with diesel - unlock the 10mm and then rotate the pump shaft ( when holding throttle open ) noteing what port the fuel comes out of to what injector .

WHen you have determined what port is injector No1 when turning the spindle slowly , stop turning and go back to the DTI guage and find the primary lift again but ONLY turning the spindle a small amout from where you stopped at Injector port 1 .
after you found the correct primary lift of the plunger - hold it in position and re lock the pump spindle .

This is now your pump timing mark - fit the pulley carryer so it lines up with the hole in the pump for PIN timing use a socket that will fit over the pump shaft and with the pulley on , give the socket a quick hard ish smack so it sits tight on the taperd shaft of the pump, next tighen the locking nut up on the pulley - fit your timing pin in the pump and slaken off the 10mm bolt and refit the spacer washer then nip up again - then fit to Landy , but not forgetting to put the guts back into the stop solonoid .

Time everything back up as you would ( cam - Crank ) .

If done correctly she should fire up after bleeding .

Job done .

btw soz thats long winded :) ( there might be an easyer way but its the only thing that I can think of at this time in the morning .....

That sounds like I could do it, it's only like getting the spark right on a distributor after all.
Thanks for the explanation, I'll let you know how I go on next week when I get chance to do it.

Just one question, should the pump be noisey when turned with no diesel in it?

Ta:)

Yes they sound a bit rattley :)

That's a relief anyway.

Can't see me doin this pump as me dial gauge wont fit on the end of the pump to set the lift.
I'm sending it back to the bloke who supplied it as I did ask for a working pump and this is not fit for purpose as it dont work..

watch this space.:(

Buy the pin atachments that screw in the end of your DTI guage :) , either that if you havent sent it back already :( , get a local garage to do it for some beer tokens - Failing that send the pump to me and Ill set it for ya .

Thanks for that.

I sent the pump back and am to receive a bolt on and go pump by return so should be mobile at weekend. In future I'll be more careful who I buy from.

Cant complain really as I asked for a 200tdi pump and that's what I got.

Let's hope tha 90 will fire up and rev with its new pump on.:)

No probs :) , fingers crossed then mate :) .

'New pump' fitted but now smoking really bad and not running much above tickover.

Took injectors out and two are very wet and two are very dry so suspect that dirt may have passed through the pump and fouled the injectors.

Getting them tested as soon as but think I may need four injectors from somewhere:(
