Hi,
I'm based in the UK and I've recently imported a South African built series 3. The SA registration document shows a date of first licensing of 01/01/1986, this is obviously not the build date but does anyone know if any records exist in SA that would prove when it was actually built?
If I register the vehicle with the DVLA without any build date evidence they'll probably give it a 1986 registration which means it won't be road tax exempt.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust can only tell me it's Series III CKD (complete knock down), exported from the UK in component form.
The chassis number is 913 08053 which I believe means it was dispatched between 1971 and 1975.
Can anyone help with more detailed records please?
Thanks, David

You might have a problem with DVLA as I believe SA vehicles are difficult to register in UK if they are CKD there are other threads on LRUK forum discussing same issue and if i recall ended up with a possible Q plate...

Does it not have a standard VIN number?

Thanks. I'll have a look on the LRUK forums.

Hi, no it doesn't have the standard 17 character VIN as it's pre 1981. It only has a chassis and engine number.
Ahh, I wondered. I didn't know when the VIN system started. That would have made it too easy :(
