My heater on these cold days takes a good 6 miles to get warm.
Is this normal (i think not) or is it.
Or do i need to fit new stat.

my disco 300tdi will take a good 3 miles of steady driving and i thought that was bad!!!

Thats good!!! lmao my 200tdi um takes a good 15 minutes steady driving before its got its act together! Dont know if thermostat is in there but the temprature according to gauge only makes the second white line on a hot day! When its like this brrrr cold it does not go past the first line.......................Any suggestions?

New thermostat and blank half the radiator off see how hot it gets.
My old truck has a new thermostat and 75% of rad blocked off and it still takes a couple of miles to warm up and about 5 to get nice and toasty.

HOWEVER, it wouldn't warm up at all if it's just left to idle.. I've left it on for 15-20 minutes before now just to test it and it would not warm up. Found out the viscous coupling is seized so the engine is at 'full cool' permanently.

Getting a second hand fan and coupling for £20... Problem is, I just can't undo the existing one..

Failing that, ye might have tae renew yer water pump! Ah know cos ah've got he same problem!!! The only way me fan is comin' off is with the pump as it's totally siezed on!!!!:mad:

I have a spanner for the job. So (and sorry for the derail but this could be useful to know for the thread) you're saying that if I can't get this off then one way could be to slaken the belt, take off the water pump wheel and renew?

Or have I just got that COMPLETLEY PETE TONG?

If it's the same as a defender 200tdi, then the bit where the fan bolts onto is part of the water pump and the whole unit needs to be replaced!:(

I use a big 1 1/4" open ended spanner and fair means and foul to lock the pulley. Has always worked. Failing that I suppose you could use a Dremmel or similar with a small grinding wheel to split the nut. Gotta be better than replacing the water pump as well as the viscous coupling.

I've not tried applying heat to the nut but that might work as well.

As for the actual point to the thread, mine's a V8 and warms up pretty quickly, say 2 miles to get warmth and no more than 4 or 5 for max heat.
 
mine just about reaches 'cold' on the temp gauge after 20mins of driving, hot day towing uphil managed to get it up to about a quarter.

think i could do with checkin it out
 
when i had my 300tdi i had this problem. It was rectified by my local independant dealer who bled the air out of the system.
It turned out i had a very minor leak on the P gasket on water pump which had been sucking air into the system.
After the bleed it was warm after a mile and red hot after 2 miles
 
my disco 200tdi has this problem too. takes about 4-5miles to get nice and toasty. also as previously mentioned, if its just left to idle, it wont get warm. replaced water pump approx 2 months ago
 
hi im new on hear so still getting used to how it works but a question for you guys just had head gasget done on ma td5 and still no heater not even a bit of warm air any ideas

Is there water in your coolant system if so, it maybe that your heater matrix is stuck in cold. Did you do the gasket? It could be airlocked too. We need mor info please fella.
 
My 300 Tdi takes around three miles to start getting warm air, and about 5 to 6 miles to get anywhere near operating temp on the gauge. Once to temp it never wavers from just below horizontal, hot, cold, towing, solo etc.

If I run it from cold and let it idle it never seems to get hot at all, or maybe I just don't wait long enough ... ;)
 
no had a local well nown landy garage just taken it back they had a tinker think i had air in matrex seams to be working now cheers next thing to do is get stupid interie light sorted sorry about spelling bit thick
