Hi im a newbe living in Walton on Naze, I had a tyre changed recently and whilst the wheel was off my P38 i noticed the front air bag is showing threads, closer inspection of the others told me i need both front and rear bags. Question is if anyone can help is, How hard are these bags to change with only a basic knowledge of mechanics? or is it just a bettter idea to stick it into a garage? Hope someone can advise me thanks Terry.

In principle it's dead easy, I can send you a guide with photo's. In practice it can be difficult to remove the retaining pins if the airspring has the older alloy end caps rather than the plastic ones, the rears can also rust in needing a pry bar to release them from the top housing. If you are lucky, you can do all four in less than 2 hours.
You should also have the EAS software and cable handy in case you need to reset any faults caused by the sensors moving over a longer range than normal. I can supply. PM me if you are interested.

Datatek, would you mind sending me that guide please? It's one of my jobs over one of the next few weekends to replace a rear airbag on the Classic.

Thanks loads for all your replies i realy appreciate it, the information from Datatek would be great and looking at whats involved will help me decide whether to put it in a garage or not, the cheapest ive been quoted was £642 for all 4 air springs fitted inc vat but being as i just bought the car it would just about clear me out.
 
Hi Discomalc, i am tempted but i dont want to take it to pieces and end up with the car off the road because i cant put it back together again, Datatek has kindly offered to send me some instructions which hopefully will help me decide what to do, must admit i am beginning to understand why alot of my friends told me not to buy a range rover, hope i dont get a "we told you not to get one" from any of them, im trying to keep it quiet at the mo.
 
I used Dataek's idiots guide on the forum to help me swap all 4 air bags on my 2001 P38 took me a total of about 2 hours or so.

I was lucky as the original air bags had the plastic tops so the clips came out easy and I just had to wrestle the rears out as they had manged to get stuck at the top. If you can spare a day so you don't have to rush it then give it a go yourself.
 
I also changed my air bags using Datateks guide,bearing in mind i'm no great mecanic(since i've had my RR i'm learning quick!)i found it quite easy.

The only problem i had was getting the old rear ones out,in the end i just cut the bags in half and pulled them out.

So i would recommend you go for it and save yourself a few bucks.

Just what i found, difficult to get any sort of leverage if the tops get stuck. Cut the bags in half (hacksaw blade) to get good access for leverage. Or could plan in advance and give a good squirt of releasing fluid for a few days before hand
