hi all
just checked the power steering fluid level, as per normal, still at max, when tested on a cloth, more dark purple than red, so, how do you drain out all of the fluid and refill with new?
 
Hi Al, I do not really have any idea how you do it on a Range Rover, however, when I did it on my Volvo, I sucked it out with a with a pump that pressure sucks as opposed to pressure pump. A Range Rover system may have a drain plug, others may know answer to that. All I know is that the suck method worked really well.

surely , if you suck out the fluid in the reservoir, you leave the old stuff in the pump, pipes, and box,
what about, putting a small tube, onto the steering box bleed nipple,undoing it, and run the engine , turning the steering,keeping the reservoir topped up? would that work?
 
I would GUESS!!!... undoin the Flow or return Banjo nuts on the rack itself would be the best idea (as its at the lowest point on the Steering system

Section 57 (Steering; description) & page 16 in that section on Rave
 
Al, You would use a pump and attachment that forms air tight seal. It will suck out everything. I didnt mean 'put a tube' in the resevoir then suck. That would be like sucking lemonade from a glass using a straw. The suck system works believe me.
 
best way i find is to take the return pipe of the pot and stick it in a old gallon can, start the engine a let the pump run the old ****e out. dont let it run dry though, have your new gallon there waiting and as soon as the pump wines put the new in and let it run through till you see nice clean red coming from the return. stop it, put it back together and top up. start it and run from lock to lock to get the air out, recheck level and jobs a goodun.
 
Remove the return pipe to the fluid pot, drain the pot with a suction gun, top up pot place return pipe in a 5 litre can, now the tricky bit get someone to turnover/start the engine and at the same time pore in the new fluid until changed, DO NOT LET THE POT RUN DRY.

There is another option for those who are mechanically minded, remove the signal wire to the starter solenoid and replace it with a length of wire, remove return pipe place in can, clip wire to a positive supply and just let the starter do the work. Slightly more controlled than starting the engine and should be a one man operation....
