I've had my Disco 300 (Mavis) since new in 1995, and she's done 219,000 miles (almost run in). She is now suffering seriously from body rot (no surprise). A couple of years I had a lot of welding done on the boot floor, and I think one of the front arches. Last year I had the back arches welded up. This year the bulkhead has gone and the other front arch is in a sorry state. Pics attached.

My usual competent mechanic isn't keen to take on the welding this time, especially as the dash and the windscreen would need to come out, and he's not confident of putting the windscreen back in one piece due to a couple of chips.

However, she still runs well, and in the last year she's had a replacement gearbox, new clutch, and cam belt. She's generally a bit tatty and showing her age but I don't mind that. I've always had things fixed as they have gone wrong so she's still got good tyres, brakes, etc.

I've bought a low mileage Disco 2 V8 to replace her, but I'm wondering whether to get Mavis fixed (and keep her) or just sell her for parts. I'm no mechanic and I've never done any welding, although I do have a friend ( and LR owner) who would help with some welding. I'm a bit reluctant to let her go, she's like an old friend after 19 years.

What would you do?

That's quite a sad story :( I'd stick at it with the old girl give here a chance. If you sell it you can be sure it'll end up crushed and turned into a key ring by lunch time the next day ;( get her fixed and keep loving her. (At least until the tyres are bald and the clutch starts to slip again)

why dont you make her an offroader so you can still drive her rarely and keep it forever
you wont get much money out of her anyway, might as well keep as a fun car and you can tow her to/fm pay and play sites in your new V8

Hey the clutch never slipped. I only replaced the clutch because the gearbox was coming out. Been on the same clutch all her life.

Buy a welder and get stuck in from the photos she dont look too bad I'v repaired a lot worse keep Mavis on the road after all youv had her from new.

Get some chips in your windscreen viewed area ...

get Auto windscreens to change it after you've welded it ...

Would be a big shame to let it go after all that time. I'd fix it and make sure you get it all waxoiled!!!

Front inner arches are a doddle, bulkhead is a little trickier but doable, not sure, but I don't think the screen has to come out for it but even if it does, if the current chips affect it enough to need replacing then get it agreed with fitter to do it at your place and so long as you have photo's of the chips and where they are it'll be no problem to just get it fitted, the fitter will thank you for the joy of not having to remove the old one first.
