Hi All,

I am wanting to tow a Freelander a long distance using an A-Frame. Am I safe to do this or should I take the prop shaft off?

Not legal - unless you put it on a trailer. And even then, watch the gross train weight.
 
A frames are only legal to move vehicles to the nearest place of safety (layby or next mway services) When towing with one the vehicle becomes an unbraked trailer so you are limited to 750kg so you could always cut the freelander in half and do it in two trips! I have known people to tow vw beetles to holland that way but it only takes a clued up copper to catch you n its curtains.Like the man says tho watch your towing limits.
 
I thought taking the prop shaft off was going to be a hassle but cutting the Freelander in half will definitely take some doing!!!!

What about using a dolly (pick them up pretty cheap ?) and removing the prop to the rear ??

Are dollies legal way of doing it instead ? Assuming you have the correct licence and insurance ?
 
Dollies and Aframes are illegal. Unless been used to recover a broken down vehicle to a place of safety.
 
so what other reason would you be using them?

Nope you are allowed to use one to collect a broken down vehicle and tow it to the nearest place of safety. If plod follows you and you pass a services orr a sliproad or layby. He can if he's so inclined pull you over and do you for it.

They were only intended to be used by AA/RAC type chappies to recover broken down cars off the motorway.
 
Some A frames have breaking sytems incorporated. These are legal. Doesn't mean that plod like them being used though.

I think Sue is asking, how can i safely tow a Freelander ? i dont think she means is she legal or not etc etc but.....

How do you tow a 4x4 safely,any tips or speed limits to obey,what if its an AUTO ? what damage if any would or could be caused to the FREELANDER !

Yes, if replying to the towing aspect,a trailor is better, A frames are a handy piece of kit,especially when 'off-roading' also better to use and much safer than a tow-rope or crappy/flimsy bar,the braked type ARE LEGAL,mind you i towed a Suzuki GV 2000 behind a Nissan Terrano .....1800 miles !!!! to Bulgaria (yes slapped wrist) and was stopped twice in GERMANY but luckily let off and told to drive vehicle as i had the 3.5 ton A -frame but not the braked version.....when using said devise,i have found it safer to tighten lock bolts down through chain to clamp together,as going down the hills to Dover car ferries,it came loose !!!!!luckily i had nuts and bolts to do what i said i done,and the other 1600 miles were done like if it wasn't there ...p.s make sure the towing vehicle is bigger,heavier and better braked than the towed.
