Hi!

After reading through these forums, it seems that getting access to maps of green lanes are not easy at all. I have used this mapmyride.com for finding out the distance for bike rides, and also mapmyrun.com for my runs.

I know it doesn't show the green lanes on there, but you can zoom in and physically see them in either satalite or hybrid mode, and using another map as a reference click and join the dots.

Obviously it would be a tedious job to sit down and do all the routes in one go, but if we do them as we used the lanes, eventually we would have a good record which anyone can access.

Maybe have a thread on here with the map names for reference.

Just a thought!

It's just that I wouldn't mind going out and having a little look at some lanes in and around totternhoe in Beds., but don't have the first clue as to where they are, and if I do find one, is it a public ROW!

And what do you do when some numpty or a rambler puts a route on that isn't a BOAT. or when some well meaning but misguided idiot puts a route on that they've done without realising they shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Buy a 1:25000 OS map and look for the following symbols +++++++ or o o o o o o o o o and the 1st will almost certainly be BOATs and the 2nd will be a ordinary route with public access, an ORPA. Once you found these Contact the councils rights of way officer and ask to see the definitive maps for that area take your map with you and a pen, and mark all the open legal routes onto your map.

I thought that maybe if the map name was listed on a thread in this forum it would help put some kind of control on the 'numptys' or 'misguided idiots'.

Thats all well and good, and if thats the only way to do it thats what i'll do. It just seems it would be so much easier and cheaper to use this site.

It was only a suggestion.

But you don't know most of the people on this site and even if you knew and trusted everyone of them. there's nothing to stop unregistered users from looking at the thread and driving the lane at full speed, on some over engineered pay & play Monster with 35" Mudtyres and ripping the lane to pieces, thus getting it closed by the council, and ruining it for everyone else.

So the sensible way is to advise people and steer em towards the lanes but not to just hand out the info willy nilly to anyone who asks. I have hosted a tomtom POI file that lists the start & end point of all Boats, but it won't show you the full route you will have to research those and work for your enjoyment.

I see your point. Fair enough.

I've been trying to jst nod and grin when people talk about BOATS and ORPAs but don't know what they mean!

I just found in this thread ordinary route with public access is ORPA, but whats BOATS?

I did do a search, but nothing specific came up!

Ok, I have OS maps on order. I also found that streetmap.co.uk uses OS maps at a certain zoom (and the OS site it's self gives you a map you can see online too) which showed me that there are a few lanes about a mile from where I live!

So now I know where these lanes are, I have to contact the the concils ROW officer?

Is that just to check that the lanes are still open to the public? Or are some boats not leagal to drive on?

All Boats are legal roads but if they get knackered & rutted the council can impose a Traffic Restriction Order TRO and close them. These were supposed to be temporary affairs to give the council time to repair the lanes. But some Councils use them as a way of closing Lanes completely. and some are seasonal and usually close the lane in the winter/spring when they're liable to damage if driven while wet.

Just spoke to the ROW officer and found out that the BOATs about a mile from my house are permanently closed!

Pity!

He advised that in the spring try the north of bedfordshire as there is quite a good network up there.

Looks like I might be buying more maps!

The Right of way officer just emailed me a table of the status of routes in beds, and it aprears the closure has been permanent since 1974!

Apparently they close them for seasons, as a vehicle would churn up the byway in the wet months. Sometimes they don't open them again!

on some over engineered pay & play Monster with 35" Mudtyres .
