Hi All,
New to this Freelander. Have just bought a 40k miles TD4. Have done a couple of long trips, no problems apart from it is a bit sluggish at low revs and lumpy on tick-over and just after. Yesterday I was on the last 5 miles af a 250 mile round trip journey when I came to a roundabout a bit quick, changed down to 4th and braked quite hard....and there was a horrible grinding/vibration, loud enough to be heard over the radio. This went as I went round the r/bout but appeared again under braking at the next. It's almost like a stone in a caliper but with more vibration. I will check out the brakes but it feels more like a gearbox/bearing type of noise. Anyone any ideas?? Reading posts on this forum makes you suspect of every bump or noise.

Does the noise happen when you're braking in neutral gear?

If so it's probably the brakes.

Try engine braking rather than using the brakes and see if you get the same noise then. This should tell you whether it's transmission or brakes.

could be a stone trapped between the brake disc and its cover or one of the pads is rubbing on the disc. both have happened to mine. when the pad was rubbing on the disc it was a very loud grinding, scraping noise and i had to replace the discs.
