Well, after spending holidays days 1 to 4 getting the front wipers to work, yesterday the rear was INOP.
It was ****ing down yesterday too, and cold, to I thought no, wait for today.
So this morning I tested the rear wiper switch for continuity / on off workability stuffs..
All was OK, switch = good
I tested continuity from the switch cables to the motor.
All was OK, Volts where volts should be.
I took off the spare wheel, stripped off all the fancy bits and took the arm and wiper blade assembly off.
Volts OK but no movement (thinking a no load of the arm / blade may fix it - haha).
Stripped off the motor assembly, removed the snap on plastic cover and had a look. All seemed OK.
removed the motor housing (they appear to be TORX, but I was in no mood to argue, so I took an allen key to them).
Guess what I found???
First I was surprised to see water in the bottom of the housing, surely if it is prone to water ingress a drain hole would be of use?
There was a load of rust too, and one of the magnets was bound to the rotor. (see pic 1) Otherwise it rotated sort of freely.
Pic 2 shows water and rust in the housing, but worse there are shards of carbon brushes scattered around the inner, and on the rotor after further inspection.
Pic 3 shows the carbon brush springs and clips (with the magnet that came with the rotor), but no carbon at all
Easy fix then.
Get 2no replacement carbon brushes (surely about 30p each), clean, lube and re-fit.
After some searching and ringing around, localish ( about 20 miles away) stealer wanted £295.42 plus VAT for a replacement assembly.
I managed to get a non genuine assembly for £62.00 ish, 26 miles away.
So after a 50 min drive there, £70 lighter ( I got a wiper blade too) and 10 min to fit in the car park I now have a working rear wiper.
Pic 4: a new motor assembly that works.
IT PARKS TOO
One of the guys I 'phoned did say I was doing it the hard way, when he was young you could get carbon brushes, but they can be had no more. He would eat his hat if I can find any.
So, if I do find some carbon brushes to suite, is anyone interested in a re-furbed rear tailgate motor assembly??
Surely some scalextric carbon brushes will fit??
