Ok so the series 2 I'm getting has been fitted with a 2.5 diesel(not sure what type yet). But anyway it has a large enough hole in the top of the bell housing. About the size of a 2p. Is this something to worry about or just stick a patch over it?

If everything bolts up tight together, forget about it. I have run vehicles with lot bigger holes than a 2p and they've gone on for years.

The bell housing isn't watertight anyway and there's no oil to escape (and if there is you want it to escape anyway) so I wouldn't worry unless your deep wading in which case you might want to blank it though water can get in to some extent where the starter bolts on and breathers and wading plugs would need sorting first anyway

The series bellhousing has an inspection hole and cover plate on it anyway - are you sure it's not this? If it is it'll have a threaded hole either side.

Sounds like some of the bits popped out to say hello! As long as there's no cracks I'd either round the hole up to the next available grommet size or degrease it and stick some gaffer over it.

See I was thinking gaffer lol fixes everything. Although was planning a wee bit of green laning and such so might weld a patch.
