Had to use a green lane yesterday In the snow! I had the hill decent engaged but when I went up a steep incline my wheels just spun and I suddenly slide backwards. As I stared to slide backwards uncontrollable I put it into park and the hill decent brought me to a halt! Amazing bit of kit that! Reversed backdown and got home safely.

hmmn, from the sounds of it, you weren't using hill descent control properly.

it is designed, as per the title, to allow you to come DOWN a hill safely at a controlled speed, and will have no effect going UP a hill, particularly as it switches off when either the brakes or throttle are used.

to use it correctly on a failed hill climb as you describe, you should have switched HDC on and selected reverse. in that way, the uncontrollable slide you describe should not have nearly been so bad and you should have been able to safely steer to the bottom.

also, it only works in 1st or reverse. by putting the gearbox into park, you've just disabled it again and brought the vehicle to a complete standstill that way.

RTFM.

You put in park and that stoppd you  i ain't supprised, your lucky you didn't fook your g/box matey

Here's how it works. You can engage it any time (On my disco 3 it engages automatically with some of the auto settings such as rock crawl). To use it you simply engage low, first or reverse then drive until you come to a hill and then take your feet off of the pedals still in gear. It will work in neutral but that's a stupid thing to do.

I know he probably wasn't in a disco 3 but I'll just add that that book isn't the same. It works in neutral in my disco 3 even though you shouldn't do that.

That extract is from the Discovery II Handbook.
