hi defender 1990
i have a 2004 04 90 td5 with 190,000 miles on the clock..had it brand new from sturgess in leicester and in that time all i have had major wrong with td5 was the light switch failed on me at 3am on the way back from london

i have just recently fitted a new clutch, dual mass flywheel and a recon gearbox as i had the usuall td5 clutch squeak, which started at 114k...made it last all the way from114k upto now...which is 190k...i use the 90 for towing vip toilet trailers and very large car transport trailers...i wouldnt be with out....i prefer the 90 td5 over the 2008 130 tdci truckcab trayback i have as i can not get on with that s..t ford engine...no guts and sounds like a 50 austin...bring back the TD5 for god sake

sorry meant to say a 50 year old austin...and it was a recon transfer box...oh and the fuel regulator at theback started to leak..that started leaking at 179k...all the work was carried out by MM4X4...i was really looked after by them and chris is a great bloke to know and deal with...most of my parts are from MM4X4

110 county station wagon, TD5 2004, 9 seats.

I'm at 142 thou, had it two years since 111 thou.
Replaced clutch, swivels, one track rod end, brakes, injector harness, rear wiper motor, all wiper arms, 3 sets of wiper blades, thermostat, one radiator hose, the in-tank fuel lift pump, 2 rear shock absorbers, de-cat pipe, egr removal, main light switch (twice) and just purchased new rear door hinges and one pair of front door hinges (drivers').

Oh, and I upped the gearing ratio on the txfr box in 'high' range while the lot was apart for the clutch, lower engine speed at 60mph. ...and of course regular servicing...

at 111 thou (new to me) was getting avg 28 mpg. Now average 33 mpg. Drive typically 1200 to 2000 miles a month (<20k/year)

So its worth doing the transfer box 1.22 upgrade then as im looking at doing mine soon?

Hi ive got a 99 Disco 2 with 187,000.
It's got the clutch squeal and the syncromesh on 2nd has pretty much gone but the td5 seems good (famous last words:doh:)

2004 TD5, bought it with 10,000 miles, it's now got 167,000. It's never skipped a beat, until now as I'm about to replace the Fuel Pump.

My 1999 Disco 2 TD5 is up to 207k now

Engine is pretty good with no major issues and still on original head gasket!!!........it's everything else that is a bit of a worry!!!

Try letting the fuel level get low, take out the pump and clean the fine mesh screens in the bottom of the pump.

The pump comes apart but you need to take care undoing those daft little clips.

It can have miraculous effects, and might save you the price of a new pump.

Theres a chap on another forum I,m on whos got a 2002 commercial Disco with 273,000 miles, and he says its " still going strong ".

I dont know if thats all on the original motor though.

Love it!

Disco TD5 here, acquired on 86,000 miles, now on 150,000 with no major dramas to report (plenty of minor dramas, of course)

Next big milestone is one light-second (186,000 miles approx - I should look up the exact amount I suppose . .. )

I bought my D2 in May 2000 and, as my daily driver, it is now registering a little over 246,000 miles. The engine is original and untouched, and has been totally trouble-free, although other 'bits' have needed to be replaced! I have had the clutch replaced once, but the gear box is the original, untouched one. My big expenditure was a replacement galvanised chassis! Wherever possible I always have original LR parts, or OEM if appropriate, and my garage think I am a loony, but I love it and would do anything to help it keep going.
Every mile has been put on it by ME!!
