As per the title, does anyone know whether and/or how I can install a high-pressure petrol pump into the tank of a 90 in place of the original?

The reason being, I have a 3.9i installed, which of course requires a higher-pressure fuel supply. At present I have it plumbed with the original lift pump feeding a swirl pot on the bulkhead, and a bulkhead-mounted HP pump feeding the rail from the swirl pot. The HP pump is noisy, and the system feels overly complicated for what I need. Pipes everywhere!

Looking at diesel pumps, they have multiple connections and I believe they use some sort of dual circuit which filters (and perhaps pre-pressurises? I'm not a diesel man at all, sorry! ) the fuel, and I don't want to faff around trying to adapt that to fit. I have a return to the tank already, I just want an HP pump which I can drop into the existing hole in the 90 tank (under the driver's seat).

Any clues please?

TIA.

We have a 2.0mpi defender which is a petrol injection, I will have a look and try to find specs. I would guess the tank is the same as standard defender.

This is from the disco manual (don’t have a defender 1 can’t find 1) but details of pump below.

Fuel Pump:
Make/Type ....................................................................... Pump pressure ................................................................. Delivery at 3 bar pressure & 12V ..
See ENGINE TUNING DATA, Information, Engine - Mpi - 2.0 Litre
A.C. Rochester/Electric immersible 3.2 bar
64 litre/h
3.0 æ 0.2 bar
2.3 - 2.5 kgf/cm2
Bosch in-line filter ’canister’ type

Just resurrecting this as I had no luck with the above.

If I went for an in-tank pump for the diesel version, does anyone know:

a. what pressure those deliver?
b. where to get the right hose connectors (they look like some sort of twist-on type?)
c. which connections to use (feed & return) and how to disable the other two?

Thanks all.

Hi, I'm no expert on Diesel but I thought the pressure came from the injector pump, not the lift pump

No, I'm no expert either! But I thought the in-tank pump for the diesels supplied the full pressure to the injectors/rail? I could be wrong.

The diesel 200 /300tdi engine in defender the fuel is pumped by the Fuel Injection Pump, it is also fitted with a lift pump.

Neithr of these are in the tank

Believe either td5 or puma engine use and in tank pump, am sure some one will be along in a bit to confirm or add to this..

@Cappo

When I converted my 90 2.5P to a 3.5V8 I used an in-tank high pressure unit for a Range Rover Classic - PRC8318.
The rubber tube (EFi grade) and bracket needed extending about an inch to reach the bottom of the tank.
I have a separate sender (two-hole tank) from the 2.5.

My tank isn't the original for a 2.5P (NRC9225 with external pump), I think from the parts book it's the later NTC2088 with in-tank low pressure carb pump PRC7019 from VIN 243343.

Has worked perfectly for the past 3 years.

Td5 is high pressure and the specs of the fuel system are in RAVE. I’m pretty sure it draws fuel into a chamber at low pressure then outputs it at high pressure. I can check my rave if you haven’t got it? I only read this up last year and already forgotten it lol

Oh and the connectors are colour coded little plastic insert things that latch into the socket if you get me.

Pump runs at 4 bar. The regulator maintains this and should it be exceeded it diverts off through the fuel cooler and comes back to the tank

@capo This has good potential! Could be exactly what I have been looking for. For £25 I'll certainly give it a go. I can't imagine that the pressure requirements are much different between the 3.5 EFi and the 3.9, and from memory my tank also looks like that (I'll check tomorrow). I bought my car as a 3.5 on carbs and the V5 said it was a V8 3500, but I do suspect it never came out of the factory like that. With the 3.9 and the auto and all the mods it needed for that, the insurance co have a mod list as long as their arm now anyway!
