Hello Troops

I have sold my Freelander and am upgrading to a TD5 Disco. I have found one with 170,000 motorway miles on it. What should I be wary of, over and above all the usual things you'd check on any car.

Thanks for your help, Neil

discos have a lot of similar probs so peps on here can offer help for most of them .
have you bought it allready or just looking what year of disco r u looking at i would think after 170,000 it should run ok look for rust to rear chasi service history and hope for the best

Had my 2000 Defender CSW td5 since new..... now 183000 miles.

Poorly repaired head gasket at about 90k cost me a cracked cylinder head 30k later (imho);

Various: starter motor, wiper motor, 2 injector looms, LH CV joint, lots of wheel bearings (6 I think, but 3 were very early on production fault inc free repair to 'welded' half shaft), various bushes (with distinct wander to the steering at the moment), steering column switches - 2 x headlights, 1 x indicator stalk, couple of really gnarly wiring faults - ended up running new feeds to dim dip resistor and horn ifirc, really disappointing rusting through the door frames which will need major surgery/replacement in the near future.....

Corrosion prob the only but that doesn't translate across to the Disco?

Sounds bad, but frankly apart from the corrosion most of it I see as fair wear and tear at that mileage - and I do most of it myself now (inc the new Turner cylinder head with some help from more skilled friends).

Sadly its one of the later 12 seaters, so irreplaceable, and part of the family so will be sticking with her for a long time yet! :) A

Main thing on the TD5 is to check for elevated sump oil levels with diesel in the oil. Check very carefully. If so walk away or budget at least £2-3K to rebuild or replace the engine. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for the replies folks.

I eventually bought a 2001 Adventurer with 123,000 on the clock.

So far it's had a full service including diff and box oils. New water pump, new sump gasket, new cam shaft oil seal, egr blank and new MAF.
