I have been given the chance to buy a 1999 TD5 with MOT until Feb 2016 but mileage is 222000. It's been a family vehicle for the past 2 years and been looked after. Should I consider purchasing??

Any service history and are you getting it for a reasonable price because of mileage

Not sure about service history and I'm actually swapping my 2002 1.8 es Freelander for it!

Seems a fair swap to me. I wouldn't worry too much about high mileage, if everything works as it should and there's no warning lights showing you should be ok. Give it a really good test drive beforehand ;)

I used to be the same when it came to high mileages but my Landrover mechanic friend put it like this. " if anything major was going to go it would of by now and been replaced" and he's got a good point...

Used to be a big deal when a car had "gone round the clock" at 100000 miles, I remember a VW magazine that devoted a page each month that featured readers wives (No cars!) that had done the remarkable mileage,
I used to buy 2nd hand cars at 20 - 30K miles and drive them to 80 - 90K before selling them thinking that they were about done, now my D2 has 134000 and is only middle aged hopefully!

My discovery has just hit 190000 still going well

Just check its not a heavy smoker when you give it a good rev whilst stationary and it drives tight

Mines on 170k, starts on the button, no smoke ever and everything works. if its been looked after then mileage should not be an issue.

Better a genuine high mileage than an underused/possibly clocked example.

Try to make sure you get some bills/paperwork, so you have a bit of info about whats been done to it.

I bought mine when it had 174k on the clock and so far so good. Gave it a complete fluids and filter change the day after I got it home and it's been fine, have had more issues with rot on the chassis than anything engine related.

Assuming it's manual it should be fine, I'd be a bit weary if it's an auto with no service history
