Hi guys new to this forum so hello , just wondered, I've recently brought a RR p38 4.6 Hse auto that's on gas and must say I'm lovin it.
My question is I've been told not to put it into low range as it will stick in there but don't know if this is true or not can you help??

It is more likely to give problems if you don't use it imho.
I operate mine every few weeks to make sure everything is freed off and works OK.
 
Where did you hear this from, the seller or from word of mouth....

The High-Low transfer is accomplished using a small electric motor, and at times this can burn out.....

If the seller has told you not to use, there maybe a fault with it and some investigation would be needed as to why....

As Dave sday above, if you don't use it, it can sieze up (this was very common on the Classics)....

If the seller said nothing, and this is just from hearsay and word of mouth....ignore it, and use it....

Oh and btw....:welcome2:, nice to see you have put your location in as this will help anyone close who maybe able to pop round and give you a hand, should it be needed....also don't forget to put the year of your vehicle too, as they were a number of changes in the models life....

It's a 2000 model, the seller never said anything it's just what I heard so was a bit reluctant to put it into low incase it never came out again.

whats totaly mind baffling is...did you not when looking it over before buying and testing everything, did you not ask any issues with the hi low range and TEST IT ???? :doh:

That is the number one golden rule when looking for P38's or L322...test and check everything...then go back and test it again, and for more fun check 3,4 and 5 times over .... ****es off the seller, but these are expensives beasts to repair at times....
 
as already said, use it now & again.
It might be a case of the previous owner not knowing how to get it into low box by stopping and selecting neutral, waiting for the orange light to come on & stay on the dashboard. If you select low box before the orange light comes on perm (normally associated with a clunk) it won't go in properly

Noprmally reliable on the P38 (can't beleive I'm saying that)
 
Yes I did check it all over and make sure it was all working, as I said it was just something someone said but thanks for the advice again.

They're talking rubbish. As mentioned previously, it's far better to 'exercise' it occasionally. It's just as likely to not come out of hi range as to stick in lo range - as already mentioned, it's just a motor that can burn out if it all gets stiff but you can reduce the risk by exercising it.
