Hi ,
Been running Landrover’s for many years now mainly the usual discovery’s, 90’s and until recently a 110.

I have just taken the plunge and bought a fantastic 1972 series 3. Now the decision I have is do I drive it and take it back to Northern Ireland on the boat which is about 380 miles or do I get it transported???

It is fitted with a 200tdi with overdrive and is solid throughout.

Any thoughts would be greatly received. Thanks in advance!

Any restrictions from EU about driving over mud imported, needs thousand of documents.:D

Welcome to LZ.
It looks pretty good, no reason that can't do 380 miles.
If anything, Series are more reliable than later models, because they are simpler.
I used to drive mine all over the country, never had any issues I couldn't easily fix.
 
Thanks for all the responses. Looks like I will be driving it home! Secretly this is probably what I was hoping for. That did if you see me stranded around the M25 in a cloud of smoke be sure to stop!! Will update you when I get it home. Thanks again.
 
Hi Folks,
Collected series 3 today for the drive from London to Holyhead. All was going great and landy was driving excellent. Stoped of at M6 toll services for a coffee and landy would not start again. To me it sounded like a starter problem as it was spinning when turning the key but was not cranking the engine, however the started appears to be new.

Having no tools with me I had to call in the RAC. Long story short I am still at the services in the Days Inn hotel! Engine would not manually crank either with a socket and bar (200tdi). Landy is being collect this evening and taken to a garage for a hopeful repair tomorrow so I can be on my way again to Holyhead.

Anyone any experience of this??

Hi, any chance you can bump start it.
I've never experienced it but maybe the starter ring on the flywheel has some broken teeth causing the starter to spin but not turn the engine over.
Hope you get it sorted

Thanks Steve. Only tried the once to bump start it as it wouldn’t solve the problem, as soon as I stoped again. Is it a big job to replace the starter ring. It just I could really be with getting back home tomorrow.

If it is the ring gear on the flywheel, then it's either engine or gearbox out, remove flywheel, cut old one off and fit new one by heating ring gear and freezing the flywheel. Or get a new flywheel with gear already on. I've never done it, so I'm sure there is more to it.
It might not be the ring gear, best way to check would be to remove the starter motor and see if there are some missing teeth on the ring gear through the hole.
If they look all ok then the starter could be seized (plunger) so it won't engage the ring gear (if that makes sense).
Although the starter might look new doesn't mean its any good

Thanks Steve…possibly a big enough job by the sounds of it! I’ll keep you posted.
 
Yes, I’m in hotel and landy is away to garage who says that they will start working on it first thing. So fingers crossed! It’s in pitstop motors Lichfield

Take the starter off. Just 2 bolts and a wire. If the starter dog has locked in the ring , you should be able to bump start with the starter off.

Usually, you can pop the dog off the ring by putting the vehicle in gear, and rocking it back and forth.
 
Thanks for all your comments. Turns out the starter motor is knackered. Just waiting on replacement then hopefully will be underway again!
