Hi Everyone,
I'm never too good at these things but here goes...
My name's Chris. I have a wife (Elaine) and 4 kids. 3 of the kids are over 18. The eldest turns 21 next month and the youngest has just turned 14.

At the moment I'm looking for a replacement for my faithful old (and very knackered) Mitsubishi Shogun. I'm thinking of either a Nissan X-Trail (I've joined at forum for then too!) or a Freelander - am interested in peoples experiences of either.

Earlier this year my wife suffered a massive stroke which left her with restricted mobility and some speech problems, She's bought a nifty little mobility scooter which come apart well to fit in the boot of the Shogun and enables her to enjoy days out. Obviously, it's important that any 'new' car can accommodate it.

I also need to be able to at as our youngest's taxi (find me a Dad who doesn't) She's a trumpet player in the Coventry Youth Wind Orchestra and I don't like the idea of her on a bus with a valuable trumpet!

I look forward to hearing from you all as well as reading you're experences.

Hey there, Chris welcome to the LZ forum, sorry to hear that about your wife, no doubt your kids will be able to give her some help in the time of her convalescence.
If you post your enquiry in the Freelander section I'm sure one or more of the "Hippo", (they call them "Hippos"), owning members will be able to help with any info you may require, there is a great depth of experience with all the foibles and such of these vehicles.

Hello Chris, welcome to Landyzone. My wife has speech problems too, she won't shut the fluk up. There's not much room in the back of a Freelander with the rear seats in place. The Nissan is a good bet but I believe they are heavy on fuel.

sorry to hear of ur beloved

have u ever considered a D2 or D3 seeing u can drop the suspension , plenty of room in the boot for ur wife's scooter etc

Hi Chris and welcome to the madness that is LR ownership. Whilst I personally prefer the FL1 as it suits my purposes better, as a family car I think the FL2 is a modern, safer, more powerful, more economical and crucially more reliable vehicle. It's also wider and longer which might point to more interior space for your wife's scooter. If you ask in the Freelander forum I'm sure one of the gurus will give you more detailed information. I believe there was an issue with the rear diff on earlier cars but that the problem is resolved on later iterations. As you realise, the service record is far more important than the miles travelled. Good luck.
