Hi all.

New to the forum, and hoping for a bit of advice before blundering ahead and buying something.
At the moment I have a 4.0 Grand Cherokee that we tow our medium size caravan with.

However, in the near future we intend to upgrade the van to a much bigger twin axle. The problem is it could be getting very close to the Cherokee legal towing limit (quite low at 2,300kg

So, considering a V8 Rover which have the much higher limit of 3,500

Question is, in the opinion of you guys with a lot more Rover experience, what should I be looking for and which would serve me best in term of ease of maintenance, rot resistance, reliability, etc.

A Discovery 2 V8
or a
Range Rover P38 V8

for me the P38 4.6 doesn’t see a trailer, but the fuel gauge might:eek: our L322 don’t see it either and the gauge is a little slower but it’s diesel. Not everybody’s taste or price range.
Don’t know about the D2 so won’t comment to much, they only went up to the 4.0v8 (?) and don’t think they are as good rust wise.
The biggest problem is getting the “good one”with the P38 Bodies are generally in good nick, a well serviced one will be a good start, but there is always the liner issue:(, which to be honest seems luck, but can be expensive. Some say the Diesel P38 is capable of towing up to its limits, but again they can have their own issues.
Could you stretch the budget to a newer L322? As some more options there.
all with there own issues, so don’t rush

good luck:)

The D2 will be simpler to maintain and is a nice drive.

The 4.0 D2s have plenty of power for towing, just look out for rot especall the rear half of the chassis and the front particularly the front bodymounts.

Also worth checking the inner arches.

The p38 4.6 has loads of power and is a great tow horse, however the leccy bits can throw a wobbly and the Rover V8 needs the cooling system really looked after to maintain the engines reliability.

I could go into more detail,. Etc

Do you guys not look at the date of post before wasting your time replying to one started 18 months ago ? or am i missing summat ?
