From what you say, is it possible that the copper bars are for the winch to get it's working load from the battery through the built-in relay?

Your description is a bit on the vague side and I have re-read it half a dozen times and still can't really fathom it out!

I think i kinda understand you, you have a twin solenoid winch and the twin solenoids are connected with like a copper earth strap now you say there are 2 large terminals and 2 small terminals, have you looked at the bolts on the terminals for spanner marks and the thickness of the wire generally gives it away, i would say (cant be certain without pics) that each solenoid has a large terminal and a small terminal and being that both solenoids are joined together your red should be the bigger of the two wires and the black the smaller one so the red wire should go to the bigger terminal and the black the smaller one and not a problem 2 wires 4 terminals as you said they are joined together by the copper already so that gives you your power and earth from one to the other as for your other problem not sure hope it helps
