Is there anyone out there who can help me with this. I have a 2002 Freelander Gx 1.8 manual petrol freelander which runs fine when used on its own.

When I tow a caravan with it I get an unexplained oil leak from somewhere that drips onto my exhaust right near the main engine. The oil leaves no marks on the head and general engine casing which makes it near impossible for me to trace and everytime I stop towing the problem goes away. As you can imagine the stink it creates is awful as the oil burns off the exhaust.

I assume the leak is being caused by the increased engine oil pressure but I can see no leaks around any gaskets and it does not seem to be getting any worse. Is there anyone out there who has had something similar or is the another way the oil can escape?

any help would be appreciates

Hi

If you have increased oil pressure you may get leaks from gaskets which are not up to spec or old. Try changing the rocker box gasket and see if it goes away.

The oil must leave a stain behind on the exhaust, remember the oil may be blowing backwards whislt driving. My point is you will need to get underneath the car and have a look underneath.

You have mentioned you can see no oil at all coming from the top of the engine and leaking down the head which will rule out a rocker cover gasket and anyway the pressure wont be that great up the top of the engine to only cause it to leak when under heavy load.

Check the sump gasket and work upwards from round the back of the engine.

Zippy.
