So dont know where to start
Have an 05 freelander 1.8 FSH 50,000 miles just done Headgasket Cambelt Water pump etc
Fully flushed the water system etc
All has been fine for 1000 miles then something strange happened my son was driving the car , he phones and says temp gauge has gone to the red and red over temp light is on
I go to the car expecting the worse but no it doesnt smell hot has used no water dip stick is clear.
Drive the car home no problems
can finally recreate the problem
The car will idle all day temp gauge bang in the middle never moves ,if you drive it softly changing gear max of 3000rpm temp stays bag in the middle But if you just accelerate that bit harder change gear at 4000rpm after a couple of goes temp shows normal then in a second goes to Full hot with red light on and fans at full speed
I thought it might be thermostat have the later type mounted in the top to bottom hose
But this opens around 90 degrees with kettle water
The top hose is 70 degrees bottom hose is 35 degrees
Measured temp by temp switch around 80 degrees
Any ideas please

Sounds like you need to recreate the problem, then investigate while it's happening. So when the gauge is showing high, actually check the engine temp with an infrared thermometer. I'm thinking it's a temp sensor problem, rather than an actual overheating problem.
