I have a Landrover Discovery 3.9v8 petrol, 1996. I purchased her a few months ago and she has driven like a dream until now, she has only covered 85000 miles. She is standard and has not been converted to gas.

Today whilst driving through town there was a sudden loss of power, nothing there when i pressed the accelerator. The engine died and i rolled to a stop. The engine turns over but will not start.

Does any one have any ideas or have heard of similar problems with this model. I would be grateful for any advice.

Firstly check for a spark at a plug if O.K then check fuel is presant.Unscrew a sparkplug and see if it's wet and smells of petrol after spinning the engine over a few times.

To check for a spark remove a spark plug connect to the ignition lead and hold the plug with insulated pliers on rocker cover or any metal part of the engine and ask a helper to turn the engine on (firstly disconnect the centre ignition lead on the distributer)

if you have a nice blue spark all is well a yellow is not bad.

This should narrow down if there is a fuel or Ignition problem.

a problem i have come across a few times is that the coil looses its 12v feed so check with the engine cranking that the coils voltage stays on 12v,also check your distributor if it has no spark the resistance on the dizzy should be about 5-6k,other than that without you checking the obvious cant help a lot more at present hope this helps.
