Probably not too much of a problem for someone who knows, but I am getting seriously confused in how to fit replacement front hub oil seals. I have an LR workshop manual - the big grey book - and the method of fitting seals seems to conflict with other information I have.
Right then ; - from the parts book - front hub inner seal = FRC 8221, superseeded by FTC 4785.
Manual says to use special tool (which I don't have, but I can make something up) and drive seal into hub until flush with face. Cortico seal FTC 4785 has written on the seal to drive into hub until 4 mm deep off face of hub.
From the parts book - front hub outer seal FRC8222, manual says to use special tool and drive in seal until depth achieved, it does not actually state what this depth is, I did measure the existing before I removed the outer seal and got a depth of 6mm.

So, to cut it short, should I drive in the inner seal according to corteco's directions of 4mm deep.?
And anyone know what depth the outer seal should be set at or do I just drive until fully seated in recess?

If you look at the design of the special tool ;)
is this it Adaptor for Replacement of Hub Oil Seals (dingocroft.co.uk)

It looks to me as if it sits in not flush. Also the description mentions "correct depth"

Thanks for that, the tool looks similar to something I turned up on my wood lathe this morning before I started having doubts of exactly what I was doing.
Looking at it though the dimensions seem a bit different.

I dont know if its the right tool as dont have experience with the classic or the manual (google helped with that but you know how that can be sometimes). Would be really handy if there was a site that gave dimensions for these so called "special" tools as alot look easy to turn up on a lathe. But I guess they couldnt charge the stupid money if that was the case.

I think you've hit the nail fair and square on that one. If I'm successful I shall attempt to draw out the dimensions I have made my tool to.
Would it be a problem with copyright or patents for the zone to have a section for members to post dimensions of special tools?
 
I cant see any copyright infringement there as you have come up with the sizes and we are talking about a motor that went out of production in 94 so post them up, Wammers posted the sizes of a locking tool for the p38 no issues.

Anyroad-up, the tool actually works so that's that done and back together.
The outer seal I drove in until it seated on the shoulder of the hub, to do this I used the same tool that I use for installing bearing cups. So if you don't know, here is a top tip, when you drive out the old bearing cups, cut a slot in one, you can now use this to drive in the new cups and it just lifts out when done. Simples.
(this can give you hours of fun with a junior hacksaw!!!!!!!!)
