I have just blown the turbo on my 2004 facelift Freelander TD4.

The bearing seal has gone and sump oil is being sucked into the combustion chambers resulting in billowing smoke out the back and using more sump oil than diesel.

I heard the engine in the TD4 facelift is straight out of the saloon BMW 2.0d.

I would like to find a replacement turbo and if I cannot find an economic Land Rover replacement, would a BMW one bolt straight in.

Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of if I am to attempt this myself.

The main dealer wants £1,800 plus to fit a new turbo, which is excessive and they cannot start for a week. It seems that every other Land Rover specialist in Surrey is also far too busy to accommodate me within a week.

I live in Oxted on the Kent/Surrey border near jct 6 of the M25.

Any help gratefully received.

it is possible to get yer turbos re conned. a look in good old yella pages should point you toward someone local

Many thanks

Decided it was too big for me to handle and have First Diesel in Croydon taking care of it.

I can get a re-con TD4 turbo swap for $395 from Essex Turbos.

However, it was interesting to find out that virtually every Landy mechanic is rushed off their feet and could not help. No recession there then.

Probably more a case that there's so many buggered L/R's out there!

Worth noting that the depression filter assembly on top of the engine should be changed and at 24k intervals thereafter - might help prevent this happening again!
