    Hello I'm new to the forum I've just recently purchased a freelander td4 gs. Now I seem to have some form of oil leak, I woke up this morning check the oil stupidly didn't put dipstick back properly drove it and then pulled up back at home got out and seen oil underneath so popped bonnet realised dipstick wasn't in properly engine covered in oil... anyways so I've washed most the oil off that I can I've scrubbed the floor to get it away and I've put 1 litre back in the engine oil as it was just below minimum I've then waited about 20mins went back and level is the same and there is a little line of oil under the jeep so I'm thinking as I'm pouting it in its coming out?I have no idea what I'm doing but I need the cheapest but most effective fix as I don't plan to have the vehicle after Feb but I don't want to be buying oil every week either and upsetting my neighbours can anyone help... is there any filers or easy seals I can check first and go from there ? What's the worst it could be ? Sump? Thankyou for anyone help

I'm planning on getting a full se4vice lit for it which included a crankcase breather. Are they hard to locate and change ? Thankyou for replying going out to check if it has lost anymore oil thins morning I put 1 litre in yesterday as it was just below the minimum . Will update once checked
 
Not hard to change, but you should not use the car too much this way.
That is the symptom, shoots oil via the dipstick as the filter is blocked.

Not hard to locate because if you are planning a full service, then changing the air filter will be part of that and you have to remove the air filter cover to get to the crankcase filter (PCV ) but I would change the crankcase filter asap, like now before you get a runaway car.

Off to go check it now. I cleaned all the metal part at the bottom yesterday (not a good description I know) so I'm going to check to see if there is anymore oil on it today I will take a photo as it will be easier to show you guys what I'm dealing with. Going to pick up a breather tomorrow to get that changed asap

If the breather blocks enough to cause pressure in the block, then it is possible for oil to be forced into the intake air before the turbo. This oil is then sent to the engine via the intake ports. Being a diesel, it will actually burn this oil as if it were fuel. However it'll be the equivalent of the engine being at full power, without a way to stop it. This situation will continue with the engine screaming away at full revs until the engine fails seriously, or the oil is all gone and the engine seizes solid.

Search for diesel engine runaway on YouTube, to get an idea of what can happen. ;)
 
They guy I got it off when i asked him why there was a little white smoke coming he said someone else had put too much oil in and some needed draining out, but ovbo when I checked there wasn't loads in anyways just under minimum. Could it have spat it out ? He's drove it about 40mins to me with this issue. Could he have done more damage?

Oil ejected out the dipstick goes everywhere. It'll take a while to all drip off and begin to solidify.
 
So I don't need to replace any popes or hoses ? The service kit I'm getting comes with please see picture attached

Not in that picture, as none of the pipes have oil in them. All that's at the front are coolant pipes, power steering pipes and the air conditioning system pipes.


All you need to replace is the crankcase breather assembly.
 
Aw brilliant. Thankyou for explaining what they are. I haven't a clue. I'm going to replace the crankcase breather with a full service might As well do it and then I know it's been done. The man I got it off didn't seem to know a lot about it or anything so not sure when it was last done and the oil is pretty black so I think it's due one now anyways, I've watched a video that was uploaded further up and it seems pretty easy to get the crankcase breather and air filter just need to keep watching so I know how to do the oil and fuel filter. I won't need to out it on a ramp will i? As I'm planning on doing this on my driveway
 
Would the crankcase breather blockage be causing white smoke from exhaust ? Also the service kit I've order comes with 5w 30 semi sythenic oil but when I went to Halfords for the litre they gave me 10 w 40 semi sythenic does it matter which one I use ? Thanks
