help needed if poss pls

took my disco1 300TDI out for a spin yesterday and was running fine at first, changed down a gear while going through a village and when I put my foot back on the throttle there was a lack of power and it now sounds even more like an 'old tractor' than it did before :)
now feels like it is only running on 3 cylinders and there is a lot of vibration coming through the gearstick.
did chuck out a bit of smoke at first but not been too bad since.
started this morning ok but still chugging.
any ideas please?

my first thoughts were 'head gasket', was just hoping it may have been something else (that was quicker and easier to fix :()

Check all your turbo pipes, as they can collapse causing starvation and rough running!

thanks for that, I have checked all round for anything obvious and have just been round again after your advise but everything looks ok so may have to dig deeper

air in the fuel line, put some clear pipe between the filter and the injection pump and check for bubbles.

right!.....it looks like a combination of things.....
although at the moment the mechanic doesn't think it's the head gasket...
checked the fuel lift pump and that needed replacing as wasn't working properly.....didn't sort it!.....
checked the injectors......all working fine!....
looks like when it fuel lift pump decided to give up the ghost it thought 'as a last gesture it would shred the rubber diaphragm in to a million bits an shove it all into the fuel injection pump!
so started out as a £40 fix and has now risen to a few hundred quids worth as I may as well have the cambelt done while he's got it all stripped down!
that's if I can find an injection pump that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg ;)
anyway.....thanks for all the bits of advice to all
