Hi i have a 2000 td 5 90 defender and this morning at 7.30 i jumped in and started her to move it out the way so i could get my car out she was only running for bout 2 mins then at 8.30 the wife jumped in it to go to work and it wouldnt start it turns over fine but will just not fire up at all. there has been no previous probs with starting normally fires up first time whatever the weather and it is used daily. its only done 76k and is well serviced. to my knowledge there is no imobiliser.

i have been through all the fuses and all is fine the glow plug light comes on and goes out as usual after 10 seconds.

and yes i have doubled checked that ther is diesel in it.

any ideas as im stuck up the preverbial.

cheers

Could be numerous things. Is it making any attempt to fire at all?

A basic diesel like this not starting can only be due to a few things.

All that is needed is fuel, compression and heat.

As it started perviously is is unlikely that all four glow plugs have failed, but check to see if they are heating up - you could remove one and see if it heats up as the control relay could have failed.

Then make sure fuel is comming through - undo the bleed screw on top of the injector pump and turn it over - fuel should shoot out like a fountain.

If it does not then youe fuel line is blocked or the lift pump is duff - try pumping it

The other thing that could have failed is the stop solonoid (switches off the injector pump) - it shoudl have power going to it when the ignition is on.

Apart from that unless a castrophic failure of the engine has occured it should start, or at least attempt to fire.

There is no imobiliser on the 200tdi (unless one has been retro fitted) as there is no ECU to hook it upto.

Sorry miss read your original post

I see you have a TD5 not a 200tdi - Well that changes things entirly as the TD5 engine DOES have an ECU, and its prone to fail. If everything looks in place, the only real thing to do it get a landy dealer to hook it upto there diagnositc computer and find out whats wrong as it has numerous electronic sensors etc and electronic injectors any of which could have failed
