I've recently had a new lift pump fitted as the old one wasnt lifting the fuel and the engine now misfires in 3rd up hills and in 4th at speed but ticks over and drives fine except when under strain - I've checked the plugs, leads, adjusted the mixture but still no luck, the distributor has also been replaced so in theory it should be ok. It was low on petrol so may have sucked a bit of muck through to the carb, I have blown the fuel pipe back through to the tank but I was trying to avoid taking the carb to bits...! Any ideas? Thanks, Dan

i suspect yer timing is out or perhaps your vaccum advance int working. without hearing it , its hard to tell from this distance.

if you think its fuel related try disconecting the pipe at the carb and make sure its reaching there ok. and that there int no crap blocking the carb feed pipe. then you could remove the top of yer carb and clean out the bowl. as it will have some crap init

I had a brand new britpart pump for my 2a and it was very poor at pumping petrol. funny that as it was what i needed it for. fitted a replacement ( and never spoke again to the person that sold me the pump, a chap in bromsgrove who deals in landy bits) and all was fixed.
mine just about pumped a dribble but failed to deliver under load

Not another failed Britpart part:rolleyes:

I checked the carb cleaned a tiny bit of muck out of it and it was still misfiring slightly when under strain, but ticking over and starting fine. Anyway went for a drive assuming it could be the timing, got some petrol and got home and it cut out and won't start again! I'm going to check for a spark and double check the fuel is getting through, if it is getting both then I guess I must have two separate problems? Initially it could have been an iffy lift pump or the timing, now I'm not so sure, it would be handy to tie it down to one thing....!

as part of a refurb i replaced the dissy in one of my 2.25s with a new one, ticked over fine, pottered along fine but coughed splutered and kept dropping cylinders under any load - found the new dissy was intermitantly shorting - put the old un back and all was well again

the new dissy probably did come from paddocks

Possibly, I had that done a while ago and it has been spot on until the lift pump was changed.... maybe now it is getting plenty of petrol up the carb is knackered and can't cope..?

PS thanks for all your responses, I'm still learning so it's much appreciated..!

had an intermittant miss once, turned out to be a plug. checked everything and couldnt find anything wrong. put a new set of ngks in and she was sweet again.

Yes Ive had that experience already with the plugs! Anyway, further to the above a break in the wire from the coil to the dizzy was the culprit for part of the problem. Got it going again, checked all filters, had the carb to bits and still worked when put together! No muck anywhere but still left with the original prob, adjusted the timing slightly with no luck and checked the points. I'm going to get the timing double checked this week by someone but if im still left with the original prob I guess it must be a faulty lift pump, its from bearmach - has anyone heard of problems with these? Other than this, if the coil was faulty would it cause the the problem?

is it me or are spark plugs becoming unreliable? I have had problems with a number of vehicles with bosch plugs. change to NGK and it seemed improved. this is not land rover specific, i have seen champion plugs last 10 years or more yet new ones seem to last just to the service interval. must be getting old. i remember motor industry claims 15-20 years ago when they wrote that plugs would last 200,000 miles or the life of the vehicle. yeah. That would not be good for the motor industry that want to sell you a new vehicle every 6 years..............................................

did a service once on me s11, in went new chumpion plugs, got a miss, out went chumps and took the miss with them. bloody things. ngk are all i will fit nowadays. dont think it could be the coil cos they usually work or not, but my bruvs ex mod 11a would run fine on the flat , but tilted over slightly passenger side down would cut out and refuse to start. that was the coil !!!.

just had a thought, its not an ex mod with twin tanks is it, cos the change over switch for the tanks have a habit of drawing air in.

When I bought it the engine earth strap was hanging loose... soon fixed that! Bit odd that tilting one way and cutting out..! This just does it anywhere, up hill, on a flat bit of road.. its not an ex mod. I will keep you posted, I hope to have it sussed by the end of the week... possibly..!

Quick update, Ive cleaned the fuel line right through, filters, carb etc, checked the plug gaps, checked the leads and tried a replacement set of leads, tested the coil and tried a replacement coil and adjusted the timing, all with no luck so its looking more and more like its the pump seeing as that is the only thing that has changed. I havent really been using it much because of the misfiring but I took it to work on wednesday and wished I hadnt, it must be fuel related as it misfires, but when you get past the 5 or 6 mile mark when the engine has warmed up it starts to mess about when you get to a slope, it doesnt necessarily have to be under strain as it does to start with!

how much fuel do you have in it? have you taken the pick up pipe out of the tank?
the pipe may be getting partially blocked when the pump is sucking up the fuel and crud at the bottom of the tank which then drops off when the engine is stopped or it may even be rusted through at one point and the pump could be drawing air through it.

Turns out it was a dodgy lift pump as some of you said.... new one fitted, spot on now, just needs a bit of fine tuning! Thanks for all your help..
