Hi,
I've just blught my first landy, a 94 Discovery 3.9 V8 ES manual. It's been bought as a tempory repacement for my '04 VW Touareg which is in the shop waiting a new engine.
Although I say temporary, I've been looking to get one as a toy for offraoding for a while so I'm hoping my wife will forget about it and I'll just keep it when VW gets back on the road!
I've always wanted a V8 and have absolutely fallen in love with the sweet burble from the engine and it's effortless torque. Oh, and I got 19mpg for my first week of commuting!! How does that compare to others?
All has not been plain sailing thouogh, it broke a rotor arm within 2 days of getting it which left me waiting for the RAC for 5 hours. But despite that the big green disco is working it's way into my affections....
One question for the forum though, I see talk of series 1, series 2, 200 series and 300 series. How do I find out which of these I've got as I've already bought a o/s mirror that is the wrong model?
Howdy to everyone and thank you for allowing me to join your forum.:)

94 will be a Discovery 1

200/300 are diesel engines. I think it went from 200 to 300 in 1994

Other far more knowledgeable people will be able to tell you more

Series I, II and III were the original versions replaced by the 90's 110's (wheelbase inches) and later the Defender marque. Ie the workhorse models. The Discovery 1's had a few changes of style too so you may have to quote the year when looking for parts.

My Toaureg shattered a piston crown, Warranty Direct are currently refusing to pay...

I'm loving my Disco' especially the sound of that lovely V8, trouble is I origionally wanted a P38 Range and it's still nagging away at me....

Should I change to sate my thirst or stick with my Disco? Can anyone advise on the pros and cons of Disco versus P38 Range?

ive got a 97 3.9l auto and i prefer it over the r/r 4.6 and the dse, i aint got eas problems to worry about or mistifying leccy problems..i feel more confident of getting to my destination in the disco whereas in the r/r i wasnt as confident, 19mpg? thats pretty good

Thanks Nathan5346,
I must admit the worries over the RR's reliability are the main thing that holds me back.

It's just they look so damn good and the Disco is just a bit tight on leg room for me too....

BTW, EAS? Is that the air suspension??

'94 on an "L" Discovery ES 3.9 V8 manual. 118k miles.

As it's a 3.9, you'll probably have the updated Disco (commonly referred to as the 300 shape), as they changed from the 3.5 lt motor to the 3.9lt in 94'

Aaahhhh!!!
Now that makes sense as I ordered a series 1 Disco o/s mirror and it's wrong, so being the updated one makes sense...

Any other differences/variations I should be aware of?

Thanks...

Oh My God!!
I'm getting serioussly hooked on my little green monster, don't know why I just can't help myself!

I'm still having trouble justifying the mpg to Mrs. jsf79, the wing mirrors still won't work, the cowling below the dash still drops down to interfere with the clutch pedal, I've just given up on the CD player and dropped my prized Alpine head unit into it.....

And do you know what? I just don't care!

I love chugging around in it listenning to that V8, I love that my dog can sit on the back seat and see out of the window without having to jump up, I love the reaction from other Landy owners and I love the fact that it puts a smile on my face even though I don't know why.

There. I've said it now. Am I going mad?

No your not going mad, you have just discovered why we all love our Landrovers. Welcome to the club.

Stick with yer disco & forget the P38. They're nice motors but need some serious looking after whereas the disco is just like the old classic rangie. As long as you don't have serious rust issues your V8 will give you years of pleasure.

UPDATE!!

Well, I sold my Landy as a friend was nagging me to have it and I'd been told that my Touareg was coming back. Then i found out it would be for another month so I needed another tow-car.
So, I've just picked up a 1995 P38 4.0SE manual. It's got facelift lights front and back, RR Sport front grill and side vents in the front wings. All works okay( so far ), even the air suspension!!
I'm totally in love and have already had two people ask to buy it. I've never had such a reaction to a car from others before.
BTW, do I have to formally move to to the Rangey forum now?
Thanks to veryone for your friendship and support.
