Hi,

I uploaded some pics on my original post, but because of the title, I thought you Guru's may miss my request for help.

Here are the pics.

The No. 2 cylinder (LH bank) is a different colour to the rest and I've been advised by so many people that this is a problem cylinder. My problem is that it only looks to be 0.5 mm lower than the rest. Is this enough to cause the problem?

Thanks for any advice

its block cracking that causes issue ,gasses /coolant pass up between liner and block ,lh bank as passenger side ?in which case cylinder 3 ,cleaned head is sure sign of coolant entering cylinder

no2 on that bank but its called number 3 cylinder ,unless you can see obvious other means of water entry your probaly looking at getting top hat linered block

Thanks, thats where all the roads are leading to.

As I need it running by the end of the month, I will probably put a replacement engine in and get this one sorted over winter.

Anyone got a 3.9 V8 engine in NE england that will last for a few months.

Just a thought, if I fitted the heads back with new gaskets etc, would it fail straight away, or last a few months?

is yours the serpentine belt one or v belt ?,v belts usually go on lh bank ,usually poor rad or some cooling fault is the cause, start off having to top up after 8 ish mile journeys and gradually get worse how quick is hard to say

Mine's the serpentine belt.
I've flushed the rad, its had a new waterpump, top hose, thermostat & expansion bottle and it still boils up.
It seems to be when you rev the engine to 2500 / 3000 rpm and it starts to overheat.

james what is the correct torque pressure when refitting the final cog ( dont know its tech name ) that transfers power from the gearbox to the transfer box ?

My best geuss is it's one of the 8 at fault :(

Just put the heads on a surface plate at work with some engineers blue and it looks ok - both heads covered quite nicely once we took some high points off at the edges.

So now its back to the block.

Ho Hum.

Just so we're all clear on this, it is cylinder 4 that has the problem :)
it is after reading back drivers side not lh side of car ,which would fit with theory ,non serpentine belt engines cool drivers side bank more than the other and usually it was lh bank with failure on those engines we found ,and later serpentine it was usually rh bank that had issue :)

Thanks, this is why I like this site. The information that people have is just out of this world: as they say - only gained from experience.

Thanks for all the help

I have contact with someone selling a 3.9 engine, in yorkshire you'd need to use your own inlet manifold and ancillaries.

Interested? PM me I pass on the contact info.
