hi all
I have a disco 300tdi. It will go into gear fine, but when i lift the peddal it grinds as it bites, like a gear grind/crunch.

Do you think it's my clutch that has gone, or maybe the release bearing?
Either/or? they both come with a new clutch kit.

I'm about to start ringing around garages for quotes. I just wanted to rule out anything else. It drives fine once in gear and clutch peddel up, no probs.

I'm just slightly confused as it hasn't given any of the usual clutch slip i've experienced before in other cars. Just gone straight to this rough crunch as the clutch grips or gears engage?

what do you reckon?

many thanks in advance

does it do it when pressing clutch and releasing it when not in gear , or feel like something in drive chain

no it doesn't do it when not in gear. it is the same kind of crunch you'd get if you cock up a clutchless gear change. worse when going down the gears..

but this noise while sounding like poor gear change, does it while already in gear but clutch at biting point

drop it into neutral on the transfer box, then try all mainbox gears and tell us if it still does it.
motor wont move anywhere, but try all mainbox gears inc reverse.

yes. any gear, 1 to 5, and R, and in low box all gears, and difflock on or off..
neutral in transfer box?
this isolates rest of drive train, if it still does it points to clutch or gearbox.
if it dont do it, then lookin at transfer box props or axles.

doesn't do it at all , in any gear with transfer box in neutral..

(thanks both
for on going help)

Checked oil level in tranfer box. To my suprise:confused: a couple of pints of oil poured out of the level/filler hole all over my drive ! God knows how someone filled it up so much?
There is play in the front prop, can rotate back and forth about 45degrees with hand (back prop solid, should front be the same?)

does sound unusal from your description ,but definately worth checking gear box oil for contamination /debris ,whether anys gone into t/box shouldnt do but people silicone between the boxes so if rear seal leaks it cant run out between the two units as its supposed to

i was trying to type while answer kids questions at the same time:)
lol!

long shot at moment, just finished a call out.
pop hub nut caps off and get someone to watch the halfshaft ends while you make it "make its noise"
your looking for a halfshaft end turning inside the drive flange before vehicle motion occurs.
theory being the splines are worn on a drive flange.
will have a think on it before next post.

edit. its not the clutch, so dont take the box out. yet.
where abouts are you?

was handbrake on?
was motor in gear and on an incline?
chock wheels, leave in neutral, handbrake off. should be a bit of wiggle in both props.

lol!

I've just been on the phone to a local land rover mechanic (old school, wont touch anything newer than a 300tdi).
I described the symptoms and he reckoned it sounds like the disco may be on it's original valeo clutch, which is now breaking up. He reckons if i keep on driving it eventually it will become stuck in gear as the plates finally give up.

Sounds plausible? Are you sure it can't be the clutch?
Just had a thought - i was at a steep junction yesterday, and it did require a lot more effort to get the car moving - i.e clutch slip, with noise of course..:(

oh the trials of a land rover........

could be difficult to say with your description but slipping on a steep junction would indicate clutch needs changing anyhow

When a clutch is changed is this the time to change the fork as well?
i.e should i buy a kit including a replacement clutch fork? i wont be doing the work myself, just seriously fed up with garages charging a fortune for parts.

garage charged me £149 + vat for a timing belt kit, just the kit, 100quit more to fit!!
