Hi All, Been lurking on this forum for a while and so far I have found great answers to all my LR woes which have been D2 (auto) based. Now we have a 1988 110 as I dont think I suffer enough! The engine is running sweet as a nut, but the other day I came round a corner and the transfer box disengaged and I couldn't re-engage and get any drive! I can re-engage it in low or high and lock the dif, but I get no drive through to the props. Engine runs fine, no grinding or knocking, just no drive. I can move through the gearbox OK and dont need to use the clutch to do this with the engine running! If I engage low diff and first or reverse, I can get a slight attempt at forward/reverse motion as I release the clutch, but thats all, especially if I release the clutch quickly. Nothing in high diff. And no strange noises from drive and drop in engine revs as if it were taking load. Its almost as if the clutch is stuck engaged and therefore with no connection to the friction plate - can that happen?
I am hoping it's not something between the gbx & transfer box but given I can change gears without using clutch and the engine is running, and more importantly there are no noises, I am hoping it might be the clutch system somewhere, but the 110 is new to me.

I would appreciate any ideas of areas to investigate / check.

I'd guess the clutch plate splined center has parted company with the rest of the plate.

What does the pedal feel like? ie does the pedal return to its normal position?

Hi Lynall - thanks for asking. Pedal feels fine - full movement up and down returns to normal position. Doesnt really feel much different than it did when the clutch was working fine, was never particulaly heavy

Gearbox out then, pressure plate operation sounds fine from what you say. Not a difficult job but long winded. Rusted floor plate screws are a pain, I've replaced all mine with stainless. Had to do this job last winter outside and it rained lots, not pleasant.
Have you got access to an engine crane?

The same thing happened to my brother in law earlier this year. We took the engine out though as in his case it was easier.....
 
Thanks Flossie - Damn - was hoping to avoid gbx/engine out! No, dont have an engine hoist. Been thinking about one! But most of all, wish I had a nice warm garage to work in (or even a cold one come to that) :-(

I would pull engine every time, still easier with floor plates up to get to bell housing nuts, also with engine on crane you gets lots of wiggle room and power when trying to get input shaft into clutch splines and fo course very little laying on your back apart from lower housing nuts and engine mounts.
 
Always engine out saves time and grief , also gives you chance to easily access/ sort any niggles on the engine wile it’s out
 
As above - take the engine out. I've done this twice by the side of the road, once in the ****ting rain. It's an easy job. Taking the grill and radiator out helps. You didn't say what engine you've got but consider doing the rear crank seal if there is even the slightest hint of a leak - I would just replace it regardless as you've got the engine out.
