Hi
I am new to defenders - have a 2008 90 Puma engine. Had it one week - it’s under a 3 month warranty so back at the garage. Was fine but then started to sound like it was grinding and slowing - no power and black smoke. Was at high speeds but now also at lower. Hopefully garage will sort it but it would help if I had an idea what to expect and what I could do myself in the future? It’s got 60,000 on the clock and I love it to bits but is this a common problem????

Black smoke is caused by to much fuel or to little air getting in the engine.

Split in the hose between the turbo and intercooler is a known problem on pumas. The 90 degree bend off the outlet from the turbo splits because the steering shaft knuckle joint rubs on it. A dealer replacement for a modified hose component is required, done under a recall. This might have been done by previous owner however, so you might need to look elsewhere in the air system between the turbo, intercooler and inlet to the engine.
